YARNING-Yarning is an informal conversation that is culturally friendly and recognized by Aboriginal people\[s\] as a means to communicate about day-to-day matters, share with someone, or provide and receive information about community, family, or anything that impacts Aboriginal ways of life\ \ ♣ You will yarn as a class and in groups called 'yarning circles' ♣ Oral Communication does not just mean speaking -- also Deep listening and yarning ♣ Passed from generation to generation ♣ Reciprocity ♣ No formality of identity as both parties are learners in the process ♣ Different forms -- clinical, social, therapeutic\ \ \ Yarning activity -- 'Who am I' Introduce yourself Your course One personal positive matter related to you and One thing that worries you, or are concerned about Also, what knowledge do you already possess about the culture of First Nation Australians? What do you hope to learn from this unit throughout the semester?\ \ The Cultural Security\ \ Brokerage ♣ the act of bridging, linking or mediating between groups or persons of differing cultural backgrounds for the purpose of reducing conflict or producing change\ ♣ third space concept\ ♣ e.g., Yarning, Aboriginal Liaison Officers\ \ \ \ Protocols\ \ ♣ The customs, lore and codes of behavior of a particular cultural group and a way of conducting business\ ♣ E.g. Transport\ \ Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples\ \ 1) Land 2) History 3) Racism ♣ There are 3 particular social determinants also identified by Australian that reflect the history of colonization & past government polices/practice -- these will be reviewed in more detail in future workshops.\ \ How do social determinants impact on health?\ In your yarning circle, consider one of the questions below:\ \ 1. How do social class & stress impact health?\ 2. Why is a good start in life in the early years important?\ 3. How might work quality, unemployment & job insecurity impact health?\ 4.
