FOUR CAUSES OF WWI 1. Militarism Militarism: “I’m more powerful than you are!” This is referring to countries’ desires to have the largest military with the most weapons and the deadliest weapons. How does Militarism cause WWI? – Industrial Revolution led people to the creation new technologies that people wanted to use tank, hand grenades, machine guns, air planes, poisonous gas, flame throwers 2. Nationalism Nationalism: Pride for one’s nation. – Nationalism was people in one region united under the same government. – Often, these people spoke the same language and had a similar way of life. How does Nationalism cause WWI? – Nations willing to fight to the death to show that they are better than others – Fight to not be ruled by others 3. Imperialism Imperialism: Nations taking over territories in other places by force. – The main reasons for imperialism were to gain resources and increase their power. – Best example is Europe dividing up Africa and Europe controlling SE Asia. How does Imperialism cause WWI? – Nations competing with each other for resources and willing to go to extremes to gain control over territories with resources 4. Alliances Alliances: “I got your back!” If someone attacks you, I will help fight back. Countries would make agreements to protect each other. How do Alliances cause WWI: – European countries united against each other: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Turkey were the Triple alliance (or Central Powers) Britain, France & Russia were the Triple Entente (or Allied Powers)
