WIKI: INTRODUCTION TO PHILIPPINE CONTEMPORARY ART Art has always been present in the lives of people since time immemorial. The art of today is very different from traditional art where artists had to copy and apply classical elements of art. Contemporary art is believed to have started after World War II, a time when artists no longer felt obliged to conform with traditional methods but had the liberty to break the rules of traditional art. Take a look at a brief historical development of Philippine art through this video. Contemporary art refers to any visual, auditory, or performing output produced at the present period in time. The term also refers to art made and produced by artists living today. The terms “modern” and “contemporary” are sometimes used as synonyms. But the term “modern” means being up to date or being technologically advanced. Therefore, what is modern now is also considered to be contemporary. But when it comes to art, those that are referred to as modern art specifically are works produced between the American colonial period to the Post-war period in the Philippines. Back in those days, the work created by our artists were new and shocking, that’s why back then, it was also considered to be “contemporary art”. But contemporary art is the art of the present, so what may be contemporary now, will not necessarily be the contemporary art of the future. In the Philippines, it was Victorio Edades who first expressed his liberty in breaking the rules of art. He used bold strokes and bright colors in his works. Below is one of his famous works, The Builders, 1928. Get to know more about him in this article. (Image Source: EDADES. The Builders.
