Cardiovascular System Lab Cardiovascular system The circulatory system sometimes called the cardiovascular system Delivers substances to cells Carries waste away from cells and Helps regulate body temperature Blood moves all around the body every 30 seconds Cells The human body is made-up of about 100 trillion cells. Cells need water, oxygen, and food to survive. Warmth Mammals need their body temperature to stay within a certain range. The Circulatory system makes sure this happens so that the internal organs and bodily processes work effectively. 3 Parts To The Circulatory System The circulatory system is made-up of three parts The heart The blood vessels And the blood Heart The heart is an involuntary muscle which means it moves without having to think about it the heart has one job to pump blood all over the body. The heart needs to do this all day every single day Heart The heart has valves that open and close These valves make sure that blood flows in one direction. When the heart beats, the muscle contracts and atria fills with blood. The Atria contracts, squeezes blood through the valves into the ventricle Heart Next the ventricle contracts closing the valve between the Atria and the ventricle. The blood is also squeezed out into the vessels this is the first part of a heartbeat then the valves between the blood vessels and the ventricles shut causing the second part of the heartbeat Heart The heart has four chambers (rooms) the top 2 are called the Atria. The Atria receives blood. Blood comes in from the lungs, which passes through the left atrium. All other parts that bring the blood pass through the right atrium. Left Atrium rich in oxygen Right atrium rich in carbon dioxide Heart The bottom 2 chambers are called the ventricles The right ventricle brings carbon dioxide to the lungs to be released. The left ventricle brings oxygen- rich blood through the body. Blood Flow Blood Vessels Blood vessels are found in every part of your body if your blood vessels are straightened out they would cover 161,000 kilometers and after travel around the world twice there are three types of blood vessels Arteries Veins and Capillaries Arteries Arteries: largest of the blood vessels Arteries carry blood away from the heart. Arteries except those that go to the lungs carry oxygen -rich blood and nutrients to the cells in the body. Cells need these materials to survive Veins Veins: veins carry blood back to the heart. Veins, except those coming from the lungs carry waste materials Capillaries Capillaries connect arteries and veins. They are the smallest of the three blood vessels some require much microscope to be seen. Capillaries make up most of the blood vessels inside the body Muscle-- The Blood Movers 16 Blood Blood: materials are transported through the body through blood. Blood carries needed materials to cells and carries waste away from the cells. Blood is made of two parts plasma and blood cells about 55% of blood is made of plasma. Plasma is 90% water. Plasma carries materials cells need and takes away waste Plasma carries our electrolytes Blood There are three types of blood cells: Red blood cells White blood cells Platelets Red blood cells have haemoglobin which gives blood is red colour. And Red blood cells carry oxygen to the cell and take away carbon dioxide Blood White blood cells help the body fight disease and infections. They form in your bone marrow and increase in number when you are sick Platelets are tiny colourless pieces of cells that help clot blood when you have a cut by sticking to the wound
