The Work of the Historian Objectives: Define the following terms: Historian, Sources, Artifacts, Frame of reference & Bias. Outline the steps a historian follows when carrying out his/her job. Identify the three types of sources. Assimilate the work of a historian by completing a “detective” activity. Develop a greater understanding/appreciation for the work of the historian. Who is a detective? Can you name a book, cartoon, TV series or movie in which you can find a mystery theme or a detective? What are some of the ways in which a detective can acquire information? Take 2 minutes to write your answers in your notebooks.(play cue music) Share your answers!! The work of the historian is similar to that of a detective in many ways. Who is a historian? A student or writer who makes a systematic study of the past. Can you state the various ways in which a historian acquires information? Anything which provides a historian with information is referred to as a source. SOURCES Lets read!! Creating A Nation: Pg. 18. Types of sources: Written These types fall under two major Oral headings: Primary & Secondary. Other Can you give examples of each type of source? Give a scenario explaining how the examples given in the text could be useful to a historian. Artifacts/Artefacts An artifact/artefacts is an object/tool used by cultures in the past). Students will be asked the following question: What do these artifacts tell us about the people who made and used them? Steps the historian follows. The historian follows a series of important steps when working. Selection of a topic Collect Source materials/Research Evaluate source materials/ Evaluate- at this point the ability to differentiate between facts and opinion will be mentioned. Formulate a Hypothesis/Conclude- at this point it will be emphasized that a historian’s work should be objective and without bias. Record/Report findings. As a historian conducts his/her research, he/she interprets information based on his/her frame of reference. (refers to the way in which one looks at/interprets information). One’s frame of reference doesn’t come from schooling only but also from: all of one’s life experiences conversations, family, church and other aspects of culture. Therefore a historian’s interpretation depends upon his/her frame of reference. Be a Historical Detective!! Activity Time (Groups) Historical Detectives.
