EFFECTS OF USING ICT) LESSON 2 The Impact of ICT on Society Positive Impacts A.) Faster Communication Speed B.) Lower Communication Cost C.) Paperless Environment D.) Effective Sharing of Information Negative Impacts A.) Social problems B.) Health Problems EFFECTS OF ICT ON SOCIETY Moral issues that has emerged is Social Divided ( Haves and have- nots) ICT has affected many aspects of society e.g: a) The impact on employment b) The development of online shopping and banking c) Policing of the internet d) The use of microprocessors in household appliances Impact on employment POSITIVE EFFECTS Creation of new jobs e.g writing software, maintenance of robots and other ICT equipment Robots do not get sick or go on holiday No need to employ as many people to do the tasks, thus reducing the labour costs Impact on employment NEGATIVE EFFECTS The introduction of ICT has led to unemployment in many areas such as: Manufacturing, where robots have taken over e.g ( paint spraying in a car factory. Labour intensive work ( e.g the printing industry , checking football pools, filing etc) Impact of ICT for online shopping and banking Advantages No need to travel thus reducing costs on fuel, bus fares etc Users have access to a worldwide market thus look for products that are cheaper. This is cheaper & less time consuming. Disabled & elderly can get access to shops at their comfort zones ( without leaving home) Banking can be done at any time 24/7 Advantages They lead to more leisure since the device can be programmed to do the tasks. They save energy since they can switch off automatically Easier to program the devices to do a task rather than having to set timings, dates etc. manually: People have more time to socialize Impact of ICT for online shopping and banking Disadvantages Possibility of isolation and lack of socialization. Possible health risks Security issues You may get the wrong size or wrong product Lack of exercise if people do all their shopping & banking online High street shops & banks closing because Disadvantages People can tend to become lazy since they rely on these devices They lead to more wasteful society e.g devices are thrown away if they are not working since they are not economic to repair They can be more complex to operate for people who are not technology literate. Leaving devices on standby e.g T>V leads Microprocessor-controlled devices in the home Many common household devices are now fitted with microprocessor. The devices falls into two categories: a) labour –saving devices ; which include automatic washing machines, microwave ovens & dishwashers b) other household devices such as TV sets, fridges/freezers ( these are not labour saving but do have a microprocessor to The effects of ICT on Health/ Social Issues The use of ICT has both negative and positive : Visual fatigue Blurred or double vision Burning and watering eyes Headaches and frequent changes in prescription glasses Health problem related with use of ICT The main risks associated with using computers include Musculoskeletal problems: These can range from general aches and pains to more serious problems and include Upper limb disorders such as Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) Pain in the arm (typically diffuse-- i.e. spread over many areas). Vision related problems Computer users can experience a number of symptoms related to vision including: Visual fatigue Blurred or double vision Burning and watering eyes Headaches and frequent changes in prescription glasses SECURITY ISSUES Virus A program that replicates itself and is designed to cause harm to computer system Types of Virus Trojan horses Worms Logic bombs Logic bomb is a set of instructions written in computer code that can be hidden inside other software and set to activate at a particular data and time. A logic bomb could also be programmed to wait for a certain message from the programmer. Hacking Hacking is the act of gaining access to a computer system or network without legal authorization. Some hacker do this as a form of intellectual challenge but many do it with sole intention of causing harm Phishing Phishing : is an illegal activity where someone attempts to acquire sensitive information such as user names, passwords and credit card information. Often, users are asked to enter these details onto a website which they are stolen from. Pharming Pharming is a scam in which malicious code is installed on a computer hard disk or a server. This code has the ability to misdirect users to fraudulent websites, usually without their knowledge or consent. H/Work Read about Spam, Spyware and cookies. Provide feedback next week.
