HIST-1041 - Art & Design Survey Midterm Review Why is this course important to Video Games? Because the most important elements of a video game are a strong core mechanic (game design) and a compelling visual based story. Art that has lived on in history tells the most compelling visual stories of all time. Why is this course important to Video Games? It will change how you view genres within video games. Games are not only categorized by style of gameplay such as FPS or MMO’s, but also by art style. Learning what motivated artists to adapt and change in the past, whether it be through cultural influence, new mediums, or trending techniques, is directly applicable in the thought process you should use in creating the best looking games of your future industry. Art History is important, but are Video Games even art? It has been argued either way. Art History is important, but are Video Games even art? Roger Ebert, a famous Film critic, argued in 2005 that there has never been a game that can be regarded as art. Games don’t capture the artists soul or their artistic goals, but are programmatic and force predetermined results. He was quoted as saying, “To my knowledge, no one in or out of the field has ever been able to cite a game worthy of comparison with the great dramatists, poets, filmmakers, novelists and composers." Art History is important, but are Video Games even art? Hideo Kojima, the creator of Metal Gear Solid responded to Roger Ebert by agreeing with him. What I'm doing, what videogame creators are doing, is running the museum - how do we light up things, where do we place things, how do we sell tickets? For better or worse, what I do, is run the museum and also create the art that's displayed in the museum." MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) has a permanent exhibit showcasing video games as modern Art. So only some games are Art? No! Games are difficult to categorize in the traditional sense. What is an Art movement? Look up google definition. In general, Art Movements are classified and sorted once the works have aged and are out of recent history. This allows us to organize and remember significant changes and styles of art in the past and learn from them, to enhance our art moving forward.
