Any questions so far? Review of Essay Writing Basics Academic Writing: A Handbook for International Students Chapter 1.1 https://www.scribbr.com/category/academic-essay/ What's the key takeaway? What does a good essay need? An academic essay aims to persuade readers of an idea based on evidence. An academic essay should answer a question or task. It should have a thesis statement (answer to the question) and an argument. It should try to present or discuss something: develop a thesis via a set of closely related points by reasoning and evidence. An academic essay should include relevant examples, supporting evidence and information from academic texts or credible sources. https://www.student.unsw.edu.au/essay-writing-basics Academic Writing Required for Exams You should know GRE, IELTS, and TOEFL Essay Structure: All these exams require well-structured essays, similar to academic writing, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Argumentation and Critical Thinking: GRE and IELTS essays, for example, often ask for argument-based writing, where students must present and defend a viewpoint. This is directly aligned with academic purposes writing, which requires students to critically analyze topics, form arguments, and support them with evidence. Clarity and Coherence: In TOEFL and IELTS, essays must be clear, coherent, and concise. These are key elements in academic writing, ensuring that the writer's ideas are easily understood and logically presented. Formal Style and Tone: The formal, academic tone required in these exams is identical to what students need to master for academic essays in this class. Q&A and Wrap-Up
