# Virtues of the Qur'an The Qur'an is a heavenly book and the final revelation from Allah sent as a guide for all people. The Qur'an is also the word of Allah and was revealed to the Prophet. It is free from errors or changes, so much so that the Qur'an is complete with its entire letters without any modifications. ## Multiple rewards If you read any other book, you will not be rewarded as much as you will be for reading the Qur'an. Every single letter of the Qur'an collects for its reader ten rewards. Just imagine how much reward you can earn after reading the Qur'an for just five minutes. Remember the hadith, "Whosoever reads a letter from the Qur'an will receive a good deed for it and each good deed is multiplied by ten. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter; rather, Alif is a letter, Lām is a letter and Mim is a letter." This means that we will receive 30 rewards by reciting Alif-Lām-Mim alone. ## The rewards of reciting and studying the Qur'an The Prophet said, 'If a group of people gather in a masjid to recite the Qur'an and study it, peace comes down on them, mercy surrounds them, angels gather around them and Allah mentions them to the angels.' ## The higher stations of Paradise A person who memorises the Qur'an and acts upon it will be allowed to go up to the higher levels of Jannah. Abdullah Ibn Amr narrates that the Prophet said, "The person who recites the Qur'an will be told, 'Read and ascend! Read [in the slow and careful manner] as you used to read in the world, indeed, your [final] station [in Jannah] will be according to the last verse you read.'" ## Benefitting from the Qur'an To benefit from the Qur'an, a person needs to respect it by following good etiquettes and acting on its message. ## Etiquettes of reading the Qur'an You should make sure you are in a state of wudū and that you hold and place the Qur'an with respect and care. When you begin to recite the words, recite calmly and slowly, and read the words with proper tajwid. Also, take your time to think over the meanings of the words you are reading. Even if you do not understand the words, reciting the Qur'an still carries much reward and is a great act of worship. ## Acting on the Qur'an Allah informs us that our Prophet will complain to Allah on the Day of Judgement about those who abandon its guidance: "And the Messenger will say, 'O my Lord, my people have forsaken the Qur'an." If the beloved Prophet of Allah complains against us, what chance of success would we have on the Day of Judgement? The Prophet also said, "Recite the Qur'an for it will come on the Day of Resurrection as an intercessor for its companions." The word tilāwah means both, reciting its word and acting on its meanings. Allah says in the Qur'an, "Those unto whom We have given the book, read it as it is ought to be read." According to tafsir, this ayah is not only referring to the recitation of the Qur'an but also to acting on its teachings. ## Rewards of some selected sūrahs ### Sūrah Fatihah This is one of the greatest sūrahs in the Qur'an. Abu Said reported that, "The Messenger of Allah said, 'Shall I teach you the greatest sūrah in the Qur'an before you leave the masjid? Then he took me by the hand, and when we were about to step out, I reminded him of his promise to teach me the greatest sūrah in the Qur'an. He said, 'It is Alhamdu lillāhi rabbil 'alamin' [i.e Sūrah Fatihah]..." Sūrah Fatihah is also a cure from diseases and afflictions. Once the Companions of the Prophet met someone who had been stung by a scorpion. They treated him by reading Sūrah Fatihah and blowing onto him. He was cured immediately. ### Sūrah Baqarah Those who read it receive blessings (barakah) and those who abandon it will be full of regret (hasrah). Inside this sūrah, there is a powerful verse known as Ayatul Kursī; those who read it, Allah appoints a protecting angel for them and keeps the Shayţān away. The verse should be read after every prayer and when going to bed. The Prophet also said, "Do not turn your houses into graves. Indeed, the devil does not enter the house where Sūrah Baqarah is recited." ### Sūrah Kahf This sūrah should be read every Friday. It protects its reader from the tests of Dajjal if one meets him and it will give its reader a spiritual light until the following week. If someone cannot read the full sūrah, they should at least memorise the first ten verses of the sūrah. ### Sūrah Waqi'ah Another name for this sūrah is al-Ghina', which means 'The Rich'. 'Abdullah Ibn Mas'uda used to teach this sūrah to his family and said that he heard the Prophet saying, "Whoever recites al-Waqi'ah every night will never become poor". ### Sūrah Mulk This sūrah should be recited every night. It protects the reader from the punishment of the grave. Sūrah Sajdah may also be recited every night. Jābir reports that the Prophet would not go to bed until he had read Sūrah Sajdah and Sūrah Mulk. ### Sūrah Kāfirūn The Prophet said 'Qul Ya ayyuhal kāfirūn' is equal to one fourth of the Qur'an. ### Sūrah Ikhlāş The Prophet said that Surah Ikhlāş is equivalent to a third of the Qur'an. Therefore, if someone recites this sūrah three times, he will receive the reward of reciting the entire Qur'an. ### Sūrah Falaq and Sürah Nās These two sūrahs protect the reader from harm and danger. 'Ai'shah narrates, "Whenever the Messenger of Allah would become ill he would recite Sūrah al-Falaq and Sūrah an-Nās and blow over his body. When his illness became worse, I used to recite these two sūrahs and blow over him and pass his hands over his body, for its blessings."
