Biology-Chapter 3 Test Review Outline Chapter 2 Test Format: Multiple choice, matching, Fill -in the blank (word bank given) questions, labelling diagrams(digestive system, Heart and the respiratory system), and short answer questions. 1) Label the parts of the Diagram Digestive system Heart Respiratory System 2) Definitions Veins: A blood vessel that returns blood to the heart Arteries: A thick-walled blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart Capillaries: A tiny, thin-walled blood vessel that enables the exchanges of gases, nutrients and wastes between the blood and body tissues Tissue: A collection of similar cells that perform a particular, but limited, function Cell: The basic unit of life that can carry out all life processes. Organ: A structure composed of different tissues working together to perform a complex body function Organ system: A system of one or more organs and structures that work together to perform a major vital body function such as digestion or reproduction Species or organism: An individual living thing that can reproduce and respond to the environment. White blood cell: A type of blood cell that fights infection and protects the body from foreign invaders. Red blood cell: A type of blood cell that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body and carbon dioxide from the body to the lungs. Platelets: Small blood components that help in blood clotting to prevent bleeding. Plasma: The liquid part of the blood that carries cells and proteins throughout the body. Alveoli (Singular: Alveolus): Tiny sac of air in the lungs that is surrounded by a network of capillaries; where gas exchange takes place between air and blood Cartilage: A firm, flexible tissue that provides structure and cushioning in various parts of the body. Neurons: Nerve cells that transmit signals throughout the body. Regeneration: The process of renewal, restoration, and growth of tissues or organs. Xenotransplantation: The transplantation of cells, tissues, or organs from one species to another. Stem cell: The process by which a cell becomes specialised to perform a specific function Specialized Tissue: Tissue that performs a specific function within an organ or system. Cellular differentiation: The process by which a cell becomes specialized to perform a specific function 3) Short answers Functions of Epithelial tissue, Connective tissue and nerve tissue Epithelial tissue: Covers body surfaces and lines organs, protecting and forming barriers Connective tissue: Supports, binds and connects other tissues and organs, including bone, blood, and fat Nerve tissue: Transmits electrical signals and controls body functions Coronary artery disease-Symptoms and Treatment-Tb p.85 Symptoms of coronary artery disease include tiredness, dizziness, and pain or a burning sensation in the chest or arms. The problem can be diagnosed with the aid of a special X-ray called an angiogram, in which a fluorescent dye is injected into the bloodstream. Some options for treatment are lifestyle changes such as not smoking, eating healthy and exercising more, medicines, and heart procedure or heart surgery. Levels of Structural organisation in Animals Cellular level (heart muscle cell) > Tissue level (Heart muscle tissue) > Organ level (Heart) > Organ system level (circulatory system) > Organism level (Human) What is organ transplant and the 2 main risks for transplant Patients ? 1. There is a possibility of infection 2. There also is a possibility of transplant rejection
