Upton Sinclair was born on September 20, 1878 in Baltimore Maryland. Upton Sinclair was born on September 20, 1878 in Baltimore Maryland. His father Upton Sinclair Sr. was a liquor store owner and sue to his alcoholism, his influence bled into the influence of Sinclair's future life. his mother Pricilla Harden Sinclair, held the opposite beliefs when it came to drinking and alcohol. on both sides of the family, he had relatives of great wealth while he ha almost to nothing. due to an unsuccessful career, his father moved his family around a lot during his childhood. in 1888 his family moved queens, new York and his da became a shoemaker and later attended the City College of new York and the Columbia. there at age fourteen, he entered the City College of new York. In 1897, he graduated from Columbia University after having paid his tuition completely by writing jokes for pulp magazines and cartoonists. In 1905 his beliefs changed to an extreme when a socialist came to him about a stock yard in Chicago. the seven week long investigation of looking into the production of meat led to his first writing, The Jungle. Athough his writings were intended to raise awareness of the poor conditions of the workers, it instead rose awareness of the poor meat packaging production and instigated the food inspection laws. The Jungle was one of his most accomplished works revealing the horror of meat packing in Chicago. this raised awareness to the disaster and created a series of events leading to the series of codes needed to deal with meat. The Brass Check, was another writing about the issue o lack of free press.
