Part of the Brain Function Medulla Helps control vital processes like your heartbeat, breathing and blood pressure. Reticular Formation Subserves autonomic, motor, sensory behavioural, cognitive and mood-related functions. Pons It handles the unconscious processes and jobs, such as your sleep-wake cycle and breathing. Cerebellum It is in charge of maintaining balance. It sends signals for the body to adjust and move and controls the coordination of muscle groups. Thalamus Plays a role in keeping you awake and alert. Hypothalamus Helps manage your body temperature, hunger and thirst, mood, blood pressure and sleep. Pituitary Gland The pituitary gland is the master gland and while working together with hypothalamus secrete various hormones. Hippocampus It has a major role in controlling learning and memory. Amygdala The emotional centre of our brain- it controls our emotions- especially fear. Corpus Callosum The corpus callosum is a dense axon fiber region that connects the right hemisphere and left hemisphere, allowing those sides to share information Cerebral Cortex The cerebral cortex allows for higher order processing, censoring emotions, voluntary muscle control, and sensory input (vision, hearing, etc.)
