Geo Exam Review PART A Multiple Choice Questions 30 Marks What are the layers of the earth? Crust, Mantel, Inter Core, Outer Core What is plate tectonic theory? Earth consists of a number of plates. These plates are floating on molten rocks in the mantle. They are floating around in many different directions. What is a plate Boundary? Where two different plates meet is where all the action occurs What is the fault? Is a crack in the earth's crust resulting in movement from two plates. Why do plates move? Convection currents. What are the three main types of rocks? Igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic What forces make rocks change? Melting, cooling, weathering and erosion, compactin and cementing, heat and pressure What's the rock cycle? What are the 4 geological eras? Cenozoic era, Mesozoic era, paleozoic era and precambrian era What are the soil horizons/layers? Organic matter, topsoil, subsoil, Rock and rock particles What weather and climate? What's the difference? Weather:is a combination of temperature, precipitation, cloud cover and wind experienced daily. Weather makes up the climate of a location. Climate:the long-term pattern of weather in a particular area Inland climate vs coastal climate. Inland climates typically experience more extreme temperature variations with hotter summers and colder winters, while coastal climates have milder, more stable temperatures due to the moderating effect of the ocean. What are conventional perceptions? Rainfall produced by convection currents in the atmosphere is known as convectional Precipitation. What are 3 types of industries? What are the 6 factors for immigration to Canada? Language abilities, Education, Work Experience, Age, Adaptability, and an Employment Offer 3 push and pull factors for moving to Canada? Push:famine, war, disease, joblessness, over population or drought Pull:religious or political freedom, family, technology, job opportunity, or better education and life-style. What are the degrees and directions on a compass rose? The four (4) cardinal points are N, E, S, W The twelve (12) ordinal points are NE, SE, SW,NW, NNE, ENE, ESE, SSE, SSW, WSW, WNW, NNW separated by 90 degrees What are the contour lines? A contour line is a line drawn on a topographic map to indicate ground elevation or depression What is a Contour interval? A contour interval is the vertical distance or difference in elevation between contour lines. PART B Geographic Term Identification 10 marks Latitude Ocean currents Winds and air masses Elevations Relief Near water Review key terms about climate, resources, plate tectonics and population PART C Graph Analysis 10 Marks PART D Image/Visual Analysis 10 Marks What's climate change? What's a carbon footprint? Why is the oak ridges moraine valuable and why should it be protected ? Practice mapping skills
