An illustration of the varied definition and effects of ICT Information and communications technology (ICT) has been part of our lives especially in the virtual world. It has given us different ways to communicate - from calling your friend using a telephone to emailing your boss through the internet. It made huge impacts that made our lifestyle more dynamic and interactive. People can now easily reach others with the use of telecommunication devices such as cellphones, computer networks, and broadcasting systems. With ICT, the definition of communication has been unified at the same time diversified based on various contexts. It is not limited to just calling and texting. It now includes all forms of interacting with one another. As long as you are sending and receiving a message, it is considered as communication. 1 Unit 20.1: Impacts of ICT in the Society What is your own definition of communication? How does ICT help you communicate? Do you think it has disadvantages? Objectives In this lesson, you should be able to do the following: Recall the definition of ICT. Explain the positive and negative impacts of ICT on people and organizations. DepEd Competency Create a reflexive piece or output using an ICT tool, platform, or application of choice on the learning experience undergone during the semester. (CS_ICT11/12-ICTPT-IIt-23) Explore 15 minutes List down one application in your mobile phone and two websites on the internet that you visit, use, or access most of the time. Why? 4 Unit 20.1: Impacts of ICT in the Society Explain and Elaborate In the previous lessons, we have discussed that ICT or Information and Communications Technology is a broader term for IT or Information Technology. This refers to all technologies used for communication with others. Just to give you a refresher, search for videos online to help you recall what ICT is. For an example, watch the video by clicking the link in the box below. YouTube Eyes on Tech, “What is ICT (Information and Communications Technology)?,” YouTube (YouTube, March 09 2020), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PDQKu2-bAc, last accessed on August 29 2020. Impacts of ICT in the Society Just like everything has two sides, there is always a positive and negative effect of every phenomenon. This is the natural way of our life. We already know that ICT has been affecting our community and the society. However, these effects hit each and everyone differently mostly depending on how we use these technologies. Impacts of ICT on People Positive Effects Access to information One of the greatest effects of ICT is that it provides individuals a more flexible way of accessing a wide range of information and services. It now has more quality but for a cheaper price. It also opened new opportunities for leisure and entertainment purposes. 5 Unit 20.1: Impacts of ICT in the Society Improved access to education With the help of ICT, we have new ways of learning, like online tutoring and virtual class. This has given individuals more opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills for a better future. New tools, new opportunities ICT helps individuals to improve and be more engaged in their hobbies such as graphic design, photography, cooking, travel, blogging, and a lot more. It also helps people with their disabilities by using devices like screen reading software for partially sighted or blind people. Negative Effects Job loss ICT can cause the loss of a person’s job. This may occur for several reasons like manual operations being replaced by automation and data processing work being sent to other countries where operating costs are lower. Reduced personal interaction Being able to work from home can be considered positive but there are also negative effects as well. Most individuals need some form of social interaction in their daily lives. If this is not met, it may cause them to feel isolated and unhappy. Reduced physical activity Some individuals' lifestyles may become sedentary by depending too much on ICT. This may lead to physical and mental health problems. What other effects of ICT on an individual can you think of? 6 Unit 20.1: Impacts of ICT in the Society Impacts of ICT on Organizations Positive Effects Communication ICT has helped organizations save costs since most tasks can now be done and relayed through modern technology. Utilizing its full potential would also provide better customer relations, improved goods and services, and more. Information management Organizations also benefit from using ICT for information management. Managers are better informed with reliable and up-to-date data that can be used for decision making and strategic planning. Security Modern technology may sometimes bring its own security issues but it can also solve or reduce other security problems. It enables comprehensive and advanced features in securing physical and electronic systems. Negative Effects Cost The cost of using ICT may have effects on the operational budget of the organization. Some hardware and software are expensive including the maintenance. There will be a need to hire or train a specialist staff to operate and maintain these hardware and software. Competition Having competition is a good thing but for some organizations being exposed to more competitions can have negative effects. They may lose customers to other organizations that offer the same services or products for lesser costs. 7 Unit 20.1: Impacts of ICT in the Society Security Keeping information safe with technology will always have issues and problems. With threats like viruses and frauds, it made people skeptical about integrating ICT to their organizations. What other effects of ICT on organizations can you think of? The effects of ICT on people and organizations discussed above is part of the overall picture of its effects in society. Despite having some negative effects, there are still many benefits that can be derived from these. Remember that these effects will always depend on how we utilize its capabilities and explore its potentials. Therefore, it is very important to use these technologies properly and with the right netiquette. Review Netiquettes are actions that are considered proper and acceptable when communicating on the internet. 8 Unit 20.1: Impacts of ICT in the Society Extend Activity 1 List 15 things which are considered part of ICT.
