UNIT 2 – ACADEMIC REFERENCING Kerry-Ann Kerr September 17, 2024 VALUE & PURPOSE OF ACADEMIC REFERENCING Referencing allows you to acknowledge the contribution of other writers and researchers in your work. Referencing is a way to give credit to the writers from whom you have borrowed words and ideas. By citing the work of a particular scholar, you acknowledge and respect the intellectual property rights of that researcher https://www.student.unsw.edu.au/why-referencing-important UNSW Sydney. (2023). Why is referencing important? VALUE & PURPOSE OF ACADEMIC REFERENCING Referencing is a way to provide evidence to support the assertions and claims in your own assignments. References should always be accurate, allowing your readers to trace the sources of information you have used. Citations also make your writing more persuasive. Quoting and Paraphrasing: What's the Difference? There are two ways to integrate others' research into your assignment: you can paraphrase or you can quote. Paraphrasing is used to show that you understand what the author wrote. You must reword the passage, expressing the ideas in your own words, and not just change a few words here and there. Make sure to also include an in-text citation. Quoting is copying a selection from someone else's work, phrasing it exactly it was originally written. When quoting place quotation marks (" ") around the selected passage to show where the quote begins and where it ends. Make sure to include an in-text citation. Columbia University. (2024). Brief in-text citations point the reader to more complete information in the reference list at the end of the paper. In-text citations include the last name of the author followed by a comma and the publication year enclosed in parentheses: (Smith, 2007). If you are quoting directly the page number should be included, if given. If you are paraphrasing the page number is not required. If the author's name is not given, then use the first word or words of the title. Follow the same formatting that was used in the title, such as italics: (Naturopathic, 2007). https://columbiacollege-ca.libguides.com/c.php?g=713274&p=5082934 chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://apastyle.apa.org/instructional-aids/in-text-citation-checklist.pdf Answers 1.C 2.B 3.C 4.B 5.C 6.A 7.B 8.C 9.A 10.A Title Page Example https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/paper-forma Headings https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/paper-format/headings
