This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with the Local Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Vico Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling. This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances. We have in our previous lesson that people with Social desirables are given more importance and priority than ordinary workers and individuals who are also part of the society. In here, Doctors, Nurses, belong to the medical fields are more in demand when this inevitable change (Pandemic) corrupted the society. They are our human capital that are utilized because of their expertise in helping victims. Aside from the facts that their health is also at risks. Expectations from them is high. Society is expecting productivity from their output as social individuals so that every time people ask their help, cure from the diseases are expected. So, what if the expectations are not finally meet. How the poor people will react to the situations in death fatality case? They would look into themselves as deprived and underprivileged. LESSON CAPITAL FORMS The examples above are considered front liners whose lives are stake by the Novel corona Virus. When the situation happened months ago, everything turns out to be not normal even the condition we are in. Every one globally feels the venom of COVID 19. This pandemic shock the world that created social and political changes in the society we live in. Conflicts arises, current levels of tension around, people like them suffered health issues as form of unequal opportunity to be given treatment. The government portrays the major role in expanding subsidies to the people. What will be the role of the social institutions like government in addressing the other issues of Social Inequality? Social Inequality are patterns of unequal access to social resources. Social inequality is the heart of sociology. Now, let us find out more on this concept how social inequality in terms of its Capital forms that affects the human society in this new normal condition. In this lesson we will incorporate the three different forms of Capital in terms of access to the resources and how these three be attributed as forms of Social Inequality. Let us first define the word Capital, from the point of view of Pierre Bourdieu, Capital is a force inscribed in the objectivity of things so that everything is not equally possible and impossible. In other words, People with educational qualifications has more access in Employment rather than those who have not. Accessibility refers to the actual ways and means of availing the resources. In this term of Accessibility one thing that the lesson is emphasizing is how the three forms affects Social Inequality. FORMS OF CAPITAL 1. Social Capital. Social Capital refers to the ability of a collective to act together to pursue a common goal. For example, Mr. Henry Sy the owner of SM Corporations, more of the profits will be given to him rather than of the working force because Mr. Sy uses her leveraging technique to utilize people in the company’s benefits which is the rule of the thumb in the Company. The more the employees follow the Company’s goal the more they will be promoted in a higher level. Mr. Henry Sy utilizes the three (Wealth, Power and Prestige) that will be his advantage of getting richer rather than his subordinates. 2. Political Capital. It is in the context of local and national has been observed dramatically in this level especially in the Philippines. There are politicians who are new blood captures the masses because of their innate personality to be trusted by the people. Their reputation as public servants influenced more especially in this Pandemic time. Their major role to serve the people give them a convincing power that politician is a public trust. The more that people trusted politicians that would be their edge to mobilize the access to political capital. 3. Symbolic Capital is resources that one possesses which is function of honor, prestige or recognition or any other trait that one values within a culture. A very special component to possess by an individual to access opportunities in the society through ascribed status or since birth an individual deserve the rank or position because it assigned for him or her to be the leader. Others may not access to be the next leader because it is culturally bound. Max Weber- German sociologist and political economist known for his relationship thesis about Protestantism to capitalism and bureaucracy. Ethics from their belief system applying in business means good management style. Pierre Bourdieu- French Sociologist, emphasized the power of positioning in a social network as greater advantage over people.
