**Understanding Culture, Society, and Politics** **Week 1** **Culture** is the beliefs, customs, arts, etc. of a particular group or society. A **society** is a group of individuals involved in persistent social interaction or a large social group sharing the same spatial or social territory, typically subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations. **Society** comes from the Latin word "SOCIUS" which means COMRADE, COMPANION OR FRIEND **Politics** (from Ancient Greek πολιτικά (politiká) \'affairs of the cities\') is the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of power relations among individuals, such as the distribution of resources or status. **LESSON** **1** **Nature, Goals and Perspectives in Anthropology, Sociology and Political Science** **Social Science -** examines human behavior and society, including fields like psychology, economics, and political science **Science** - focuses on the study of the physical world and its phenomena, such as physics, chemistry, and biology **ANTHROPOLOGY** The comprehensive study of humans, their origins, cultures, societies, and behaviors across time and geography. Over the 20th century, anthropology branched into sub-disciplines **BRANCHES OF ANTHROPOLOGY** - CULTURAL -- study of human culture and social interactions - SOCIAL - the study of human society, culture, traditions, customs, and behaviors. - LINGUISTIC - explores the relationship between language and culture - ARCHAEOLOGICAL - uncovers the material remains of past human civilizations. **SOCIOLOGY** The scientific study of human social life, social groups, and social interactions. Focuses on the structure, development, and functioning of human society. **AUGUSTE COMTE --** French philosopher and mathematician. He coined the term sociology. **BRANCHES OF SOCIOLOGY** - MICRO-SOCIOLOGY - MACRO-SOCIOLOGY **POLITICAL SCIENCE** Political science is the study of government, public policy, and political behavior.
