Graduate Apprenticeship - Engineering Design and Manufacture Class: EO403 - Design for X End of life In this video, we're going to look at the end of life of a product. So what is the definition of end of life? End of life is the last stage in a product's life cycle. The life cycle starts with the design and the development, and then how we use that particular product, and eventually, the disposal. And this is the end of life, the last stage. There are a number of end-of-life options, starting from the least preferable environmental option, that of disposal, of sending our waste on our rubbish to landfill. We could recycle, or we could reuse an item or a product. We could recondition. And this is in the area of engines or machinery where we could recondition it and give it another life. And finally, the most preferred environmental option is reduce-buy less, use less, and therefore waste less. It's all about making the right end-of-life decision for your product, and you need to design this into the product as early on as the start of the product development process. So do you want your product to end up on landfill? Do you want parts to be recycled and put to another use? Do you want the whole product itself to be reused and given a second life? Do you want to recondition parts of machinery, or do you want to encourage people to buy less, use less, and therefore produce less waste? Can you actually design a product which produces minimal waste at the end of its life? It is up to you as a product designer as you're working through the product development stages to think about the end of life of your product and to go for the most preferred environmental option. As designers, we have a responsibility to think about the end of life of the products that we create and to try, wherever possible, to produce the least environmental impact. Page 1/1
