# The Sexual Self ## SOGIE - **S**exual Orientation - **O**rientation - **G**ender **I**dentity - **E**xpression ## Objectives: - To have in-depth understanding about sexuality and its diversity. - To develop respect towards people of the "3rd Sex". - To harmonize sexuality with morality. ## Activity 1: Describe LESBIANS in ONE word. ## Activity 2: Describe GAYS in ONE word. ## Sexuality - The way people experience and express themselves sexually. - Involves biological, erotic, physical, emotional, social, or spiritual feelings and behaviors. - BetterHealth (2020) - The interplay of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression (SOGIE). Human sexuality is diverse. * Diversity is a natural characteristic of human sexuality. * In reality, sexual attraction can and do happen between people of the same or opposite genders. * People do not always fit in gender roles and identities expected of us. ## Gender Identity - One's inner sense of self of being a girl/woman, boy/man, other genders, all, or neither. - Not determined by our assigned sex. - Sex is the body or container, while gender is the content or matter that fills the container. ## Gender Expression - Refers to how an individual exresses their sense of self. - Influenced by our assigned sex, our sexual orientation, and/or gender identity. - May or may not reflect a society's expectations. - If sex is the "container", and gender is the "content", gender expression is the container's decorations. ## Sexual Orientation - Refers to romantic and/or sexual attraction to men, women, both, or neither. - A person can be attracted to people of the opposite gender("heterosexual"), to people of the same gender ("homosexual", "gay" for male-to-male, or “lesbian" for female-to-female), or to both genders ("bisexual"). - One can also be “asexual” (no sexual attraction to anyone) or "pansexual" (sexual or romantic attraction is not limited to any particular sex or gender identity). ## The SOGIE Equality Bill - **HB No. 4982 Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression (Sogie) Equality Bill** - **The House of Representatives of the Philippines recently passed HB No. 4982, the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression Equality Bill, known as the Sogie Bill. The bill states that the State recognizes the fundamental right of every person regardless of sex, age, class, status, ethnicity, color, disability, religious and political beliefs, sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression, to be free from any form of discrimination.** ## SOGIE Diagram | | | |:--------|:------------------------------------| | **Gender Identity** | man-ness --- gender --- queer --- woman-ness | | **Sexual Orientation** | Homosexual --- Bisexual --- Heterosexual | | **Biological Sex** | Female --- Intersex --- Male | | **Gender Expression** | Masculine --- Androgynous --- Feminine | ## Lot and the Angels - **Genesis 19:1-5** - The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. - When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. - “My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant's house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.” - "No," they answered, "we will spend the night in the square.” - But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. - He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. - Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. - They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them. ## Glossary | Term | Description | |:-------------|:---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Cisgender | a person whose sense of personal identity and gender corresponds with their birth sex. | | Queer | An umbrella term to refer to all LGBTQ people. A political statement as well as a sexual orientation, which advocates breaking binary thinking and seeing both sexual orientation and gender identity as potentially fluid. | | Lesbian | Woman who experience sexual, romantic, physical, and/or spiritual attraction to another woman. | | Gay | Used in some cultural settings to represent a man who is attracted to another man in a romantic, erotic and/or emotional sense. Not all men who engage in same-gender sexual behavior identify as gay, and as such this label should be used with caution. | | Bisexual | A person who experiences sexual, romantic, physical, and/or spiritual attraction to more than one gender, not necessarily at the same time, in the same way, or to the same degree. | | Transgender | A person who lives as a member of a gender other than that expected based on sex or gender assigned at birth. Sexual orientation varies and is not dependent on gender identity. | | Transexual | Person who feels that he/she is not the gender which he/she was assigned, but this comes from a neurological condition and often needs to be treated with medical intervention, including gender reassignment surgeries and hormone therapy. | | Questioning | An individual who is unsure of and/or exploring their gender identity and/or sexual orientation. | | Asexual | A person who does not experience sexual attraction. They may or may not experience emotional, physical, or romantic attraction. Asexuality differs from celibacy in that it is a sexual orientation, not a choice. People who are asexual may call themselves ace. | | Pansexual | An attraction to people regardless of their gender. A pansexual person may be attracted to their own gender, as well as other genders. | | Ally | A heterosexual or cisgender person who supports equal civil rights, gender equality, LGBT social movements, and challenges homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. | | Intersex | Intersex is a set of medical conditions that feature congenital anomaly of the reproductive and sexual system. | ## Morality Theories | Author | Theory | Description | |:------------------|:-----------------------------------------|:----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | St. Thomas Aquinas | Natural Law Theory | God designed sex between a man and a woman. Believed that sex is meant for the marriage bed alone. | | Immanuel Kant | | Sex is only moral when a man and a woman experience it in full devotion and respect for one another. One of the hallmarks of Kant's philosophy was that treating another human like an object is always immoral. He believed marriage is the only real hope for sex to be accompanied by real love and respect. | | Jeremy Bentham | Utilitarian View of Sexuality | Argues that any sexual act is moral if its utility, or its usefulness, outweighs its negative impact. In simpler terms, a sexual act is moral as long as its positives outweigh its negatives. Utilitarianism is a moral theory that argues that actions should be judged right or wrong to the extent they increase or decrease human well-being or 'utility'. He advocated that if the consequences of an action are good, then the act is moral and if the consequences are bad, the act is immoral. | | Marquis De Sade | Sexual Freedom | The sense of enjoying one's sexuality beyond the modesty and limitations imposed by one's culture and upbringing. Moral Freedom combined two fundamental ideas: the equality of all individuals and radical selfishness based on the idea that we're born into society and; condemned to live in it, without direct relation to others. | | | Liberal Ethics | Emphasizes the values of autonomous choice, self-determination, and pleasure in arriving at moral judgments about sexuality. | ## Case Studies **Case 1:** Feng is a 22 year old Chinese American male who is gay and has had multiple partners over the last several years.
