Ponce, LPT Objectives: Know the definition of communication Understands the basic concept of communication Understands the process of communication COMMUNICATION Deals with how humans use verbal and nonverbal messages to create meaning in various contexts. COMMUNICATION It explores both verbal and non-verbal forms of communication, including spoken language, writing, gestures, media, and technology. This field examines how communication impacts relationships, organizations, societies, and cultures, focusing on how messages influence understanding, behavior, and social interactions. Topics within communication studies may include interpersonal communication, mass media, public speaking, digital communication, persuasion, and COMMUNICATION Albert, Nakayama, and Martin (2007) defined communication as a “transactional process in which people generate meaning through the exchange of verbal messages in specific contexts, influenced by individual and societal forces and Frame of Reference 1.Psychological Frame 2.Cultural Frame 3.Social Frame 4.Spatial Frame 5.Temporal Frame 6.Historical Frame Goals of Communication Information Sharing-To convey or exchange knowledge, data, or facts accurately. Persuasion-To influence or convince others to adopt a particular viewpoint, belief, or action. Relationship Building-To establish, maintain, and strengthen social or professional connections. Problem-Solving and Decision-Making-To collaborate on resolving issues or making informed choices. Goals of Communication Expression of Emotions-To share feelings and foster empathy and emotional connection. Instruction- To provide guidance or instructions, enabling others to understand and follow directions. Feedback and Clarification- To ensure understanding through the exchange of responses, adjusting the message as necessary. Basic Elements of the Sender: The person or Process Communication entity that initiates the communication by conveying a message. Also known as the communicator or source. Message: The information, idea, or thought being communicated. This can be verbal, non- verbal, or written. Encoding: The process of converting the sender’s ideas into a form (words, gestures, symbols) that can be understood by the receiver Basic Elements of the Communication Process Channel: The medium through which the message is transmitted, such as speech, writing, email, phone, or body language. Receiver: The person or group for whom the message is intended. The receiver decodes or interprets the message. Basic Elements of the Communication Process Decoding: The process by which the receiver interprets or makes sense of the message. Feedback: The response or reaction from the receiver back to the sender, indicating whether the message was understood correctly or if further clarification is needed. Basic Elements of the Noise: Any interference or Communication distraction that disrupts the Process transmission or understanding of the message. This can be physical (background sounds), psychological (prejudices, emotions), or semantic (misunderstanding of words). Context: The environment or situation in which communication occurs, including the cultural, social, and physical setting that influences how messages are understood.
