THE NATURE OF COMMUNICATION Lecturer: Mr. Sunny Mark C. Tesio Activity: Poster Analysis Discuss within your group about your assigned picture and come up with an interpretation about what is being shown. (½ crosswise) GROUP 1 GROUP 2 GROUP 3 WHAT IS COMMUNICATION? What is Communication? Communication is the process of exchanging information, ideas, thoughts, or feelings between individuals or groups through verbal, nonverbal, or written means. It involves encoding and decoding messages to convey meaning and understanding. THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNICATION The evolution of communication refers to the gradual development and transformation of how living organisms exchange information and ideas over time. It spans from early biological and nonverbal forms of communication to the sophisticated verbal, written, and technological communication methods that humans use today. This progression has been driven by factors such as the development of language, advances in technology, and changes in societal and cultural dynamics. The stages of the evolution of communication can be broadly categorized as follows: BIOLOGICAL AND NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION Early forms of communication in living organisms involved basic signals and behaviors that conveyed information for survival and reproduction. These signals could include gestures, body language, and vocalizations. Example: Happiness, sadness, excitement, etc. EARLY LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT As humans evolved, they developed more complex vocalizations and gestures, laying the groundwork for language. This likely involved the use of simple sounds and symbols to convey basic concepts. EMERGENCE OF LANGUAGE The development of structured language allowed humans to convey abstract ideas, thoughts, and emotions. This stage involved the creation of grammatical structures, vocabulary expansion, and the ability to communicate about past and future events. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS The invention of writing systems enabled information to be preserved and transmitted across time and space. Early writing involved symbols and pictographs, gradually evolving into more complex scripts and alphabets. PRINTING PRESS AND MASS COMMUNICATION The invention of the printing press in the 15th century revolutionized communication by making books and written materials more accessible to a wider audience. This marked a significant step toward mass communication. TELECOMMUNICATION AND GLOBAL CONNECTIVITY The development of telegraphy, telephone, and later, the internet, transformed communication by enabling instant transmission of messages across long distances. This era brought about global connectivity and rapid information exchange. DIGITAL AND VISUAL COMMUNICATION With the rise of digital technology, communication expanded to include visual and multimedia elements. Images, videos, and interactive content became integral to conveying information and ideas. SOCIAL MEDIA AND ONLINE COMMUNITIES The advent of social media platforms allowed people to share their thoughts, opinions, and experiences with a vast audience in real time. This stage emphasized the interactive nature of communication. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND AUTOMATION Recent advancements in artificial intelligence and automation are changing the way communication occurs. Chatbots, voice assistants, and machine translation are examples of how technology is impacting communication processes. Each of these stages represents a significant shift in how information is transmitted, received, and understood, reflecting the ongoing evolution of communication in response to human needs and technological progress.
