WHMIS: Know the whmis symbols: Know what it is - It is a comprehensive system for providing health and safety information on hazardous products intended for use, handling, or storage in Canadian workplaces. Know what it stands for - Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System Know why we have it - WHMIS is a comprehensive plan for providing information on the safe use of hazardous materials used in Canadian workplaces. The (three) 3 principal elements of WHMIS that are used to provide information to employers and workers are Labels, Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), and Worker Education programs. Construction: Know shop and machine safety - STAY ALERT - and stay alive. The more awake a worker is, the less likely he or she is to get hurt. If you are unsure how to operate equipment or perform a task, ask your supervisor. Don't guess and muddle through. Make sure you know in advance the correct, safe way to do it. - WEAR THE RIGHT CLOTHES - work clothes should fit properly. Anything that can catch in machinery or trip you up is hazardous. Wear protective clothing and equipment as required.USE THE RIGHT TOOLS - if you need a hammer, get a hammer. It may be handier to use a pair of pliers, wrench or screwdriver, but you are more likely to get injured. - DON'T BE A PRANKSTER - practical jokes and horseplay can be dangerous, especially around heavy machinery. If you feel the urge to play, resist it until after work. - BE TIDY - Good housekeeping reduces hazards in the workplace or your home. Always put away tools when they are not in use. Keep the floors clean, pick up scraps and wipe up spills. A slip or trip can be fatal. - REPORTING IS IMPORTANT - Never fail to report accidents, defective equipment and or unsafe conditions. - GET FIRST AID IMMEDIATELY - if you're hurt - even if it seems minor. Neglect of an injury may lead to serious infection, weeks of lost time, and possibly permanent injury. - NEVER TAKE A CHANCE - Next to sheer carelessness, short cuts are probably the biggest killer of all. To save a minute or two, you may lose a lifetime. Whatever you are doing, if you are not doing it safely, you are not doing it right! Know your ruler (imperial) Know the proper names of machines and be sure you can spell them correctly - Thickness Planer, The Band Saw, Disk-Belt sander, Miter saw, Scroll Saw, Drill Press Transportation: Know safety Know tire changing 1. Find a safe location 2. Turn on hazard lights 3. Apply parking brake 4. Place wheel wedges 5. Remove hubcaps or wheel covers 6. Loosen fasteners 7. Place the jack under the vehicle 8. Raise the vehicle 9. Remove lug nuts 10. Remove the flat tire 11. Mount the spare tire onto the lug bolts 12. Tighten the lug nuts by hand 13. Lower the vehicle and tighten again 14. Lower the vehicle completely 15. Replace hubcaps or wheel covers 16. Stow all equipment Know your tires (what do the #’s mean on the tire) - first number is the width of the tire in mm, next number is aspect ratio %, Radial Construction R, Nominal Rim Diameter (inches), Load Index, Speed Index Know welding - Apron, Hand Gloves, Mask, Safety Shoes Know the Phonetic Alphabet - Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu. Hospitality: Know kitchen safety - Knife Safety: Always cut away from your body, use a stable surface, and store knives safely. - Hot Surfaces: Use oven mitts for hot pans, and never leave them unattended. - Avoid Clutter: Keep pathways clear to prevent tripping or knocking things over. - Electrical Safety: Don’t touch appliances with wet hands, and keep cords away from hot surfaces. - Fire Safety: Have a fire extinguisher nearby, and never use water on grease fires. Know foodborne illness and how it is spread - Foodborne illnesses are caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites in contaminated food. They spread through improper handling, cross-contamination, undercooking, and infected food workers. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Prevent by washing hands, cooking food properly, keeping raw and cooked foods separate, and refrigerating quickly. Know safety sanitation 1. Handwashing: Wash hands before and after handling food, especially raw meat. 1. Cross-Contamination: Use separate boards for meat and produce, and clean utensils between uses. 2. Temperature Control: Keep hot foods above 140°F, cold foods below 40°F, and use a thermometer. 3. Cleaning: Sanitize surfaces, especially after raw food prep. 4. Storage: Store perishables quickly, label leftovers, and use them within a few days. Know how to proper measure ingredients - For dry ingredients, use dry measuring cups, filling them and leveling off the top with a flat edge. For liquid ingredients, use a liquid measuring cup and check the measurement at eye level for accuracy. Com-tech Know photography - The rule of thirds involves mentally dividing up your image using 2 horizontal lines and 2 vertical lines - When framing a photo, imagine the scene divided by an imaginary tic-tac-toe board. - In landscape shots, it's common to position the horizon along the centre of the frame, but this can give the photo a "split in two" feel. Instead, place it along one of the horizontal lines. - Try to include another interesting object, such as a tree, and position it according to the rule of thirds. This provides an "anchor", a natural focal point for the scene. Know Adobe Suite - Adobe Creative Cloud(formerly adobe suite) is a subscription-based suite of professional tools used for graphic design, video editing, web development, photography, and more. Key apps include: Photoshop (photo editing) Illustrator (vector design) InDesign (page layout) Premiere Pro (video editing) After Effects (motion graphics) Lightroom (photo management) Adobe XD (UI/UX design) Acrobat Pro (PDF editing) These apps integrate seamlessly, making it easy to work across multiple platforms. Creative Cloud also offers cloud storage, frequent updates, and collaboration features. Unlike the older Adobe Creative Suite (CS), Creative Cloud requires a subscription rather than a one-time purchase. Know animation - Squash and Stretch - Anticipation - Staging - Straight Ahead Action and Pose-to-Pose - Follow Through and Overlapping Action - Ease In, Ease Out - Arcs - Secondary Action - Timing - Exaggeration - Solid Drawing - Appeal
