APPROPRIATE AND BENEFICIAL USES OF TECHNOLOGY IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this lesson, the learners should be able to: a) identify the guidelines of technology in teaching physical education and health, b) recognize the importance of technology in teaching physical education and health, and c) apply the guidelines for technology use in teaching physical education and health. 51 WHY SHOULD PE TEACHERS USE TECHNOLOGY IN LESSONS? 52 WHY SHOULD PE TEACHERS USE TECHNOLOGY IN LESSONS? Physical education teachers should infuse technology to support pedagogical strategies in their lessons. Technology requires teachers to have both content knowledge and pedagogical skills. 53 WHAT ARE THE GUIDELINES THAT ENSURE THE PROPER USE OF TECHNOLOGY IN TEACHING PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH? 54 Guideline 1: The Use of Technology in Physical Education and Health Is Designed to Provide a Tool for Learning Content That Is Relevant to National Standards, State Standards, and Local Curriculum. 55 Guideline 1: The Use of Technology in Physical Education and Health Is Designed to Provide a Tool for Learning Content That Is Relevant to National Standards, State Standards, and Local Curriculum. Technology in physical education and health aids teachers in accessing relevant content, lessons, and videos, aligning with national, state, and local curriculum standards. Teachers should incorporate activities that align with student learning expectations and developmental level, and incorporate interactive tools. 56 The following questions will assist in reflection when using technology: Will the technology enhance student motivation, engagement, and involvement while assisting them in acquiring information and knowledge about topics related to physical education and health? Does the technology support online learning in physical education, and health including online assignments, readings, chat rooms, examinations, and face-to-face, activity-based sessions? 57 Guideline 2: The Use of Technology in Physical Education and Health Should Enhance Instruction. 58 Guideline 2: The Use of Technology in Physical Education and Health Should Enhance Instruction. Technology such as projection systems, smart boards, and wireless transmission (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) allows for the display and transfer of information far beyond the traditional chalkboard. Teachers can enhance their instruction by using those tools, provided that set-up and/or implementation does not reduce student engagement time. 59 The following questions will assist in reflection when using technology: Does the technology aid in the presentation of material, enhance the learning environment (e.g., music), and support lesson design that promotes interactive communication and extends beyond traditional classroom materials? Can the technology be used to create instructional platforms post and remind students of assignments, and provide opportunities for journaling and individual activity plans? 60 GUIDELINE 3: The Use of Instructional Technology in Physical Education and Health Should Provide Opportunities for All Students, Versus Opportunities for Few. 61 GUIDELINE 3: The Use of Instructional Technology in Physical Education and Health Should Provide Opportunities for All Students, Versus Opportunities for Few. Education encompasses students from diverse economic, cultural, and demographic backgrounds. Students should not be further disadvantaged educationally because they cannot afford or have access to needed technology. 62 Guideline 4: The Use of Instructional Technology in Physical Education and Health Can Prove to be an Effective Tool For Maintaining Student Data Related to Standards-Based Curriculum Objectives. 63 Guideline 4: The Use of Instructional Technology in Physical Education and Health Can Prove to be an Effective Tool For Maintaining Student Data Related to Standards-Based Curriculum Objectives. Technology simplifies data storage, sorting, and utilization, enabling teachers to inform instruction, students to monitor progress, and parents and educators to monitor progress through databases and personal goals. 64 The following questions will assist in reflection when using technology: Does the technology monitor students’ physical activity levels, provide valuable data on exercise intensity or duration, and offer tools with objective data for assessing physical activity? Does the technology support goal setting, progress management, and assist teachers in maintaining and managing student performance data effectively? 65 Guideline 5: Technology Can be Used to Enhance Communication Between the Teacher, Parents, Students, Administration, and the Community. 66
