Summer reading 3 : The Fault in Our Stars I : Biography of the writer John Green is born August 24th, 1977, he is a famous American author, and his most popular books are *Looking for Alaska*, *Paper Towns* and *The Fault in Our Stars...* is known for his philosophy and young adult novels. II : Characters **Hazel Grace Lancaster:** old and dealing with thyroid cancer for three years now, is the main character. Wanting to leave our world paining as little people as possible, she does not have any friends and refuses to have relationship with other people than her mom and her dad. Your support group for cancer youth taking place at the literal heart of Jesus. When she meets Augustus, she does not want to fall in love with him, scared to hurt him when she dies. But it is too late, and their love will bring some joy, memories and sadness into their life. Hazel is a great character who sees the things as they are. **Augustus Waters *or Gus*:** Just 16 years old, meets Hazel at the support group. He lost a leg to osteosarcoma, has an actor's smile and likes to have a cigarette between his teeth even though he does not smoke. As he says, "*you put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you do not give it the power to do it\'s killing."* He is believed to be cancer free but his relapse midway through the book leads to his death. Gus is a heroic character. He falls quickly for Hazel and will love her till death and after (writing *An Imperial Affliction*'s sequel the last month before dying.) He wants to die for something noble and is really dignite. III : Résumé Hazel has been living with cancer for three of her seventeen years of life. Her cancer began as thyroid cancer but spread to her lungs, causing her to need to breathe oxygen from a tank at all times throughout the day. She attends a support group at a church; she said but still goes to make her mom happy. There, she meets a friend named Isaac and a romantic interest named Augustus. Augustus has been in remission after losing his leg some years prior, so Hazel does not want to engage a relationship with him, not wanting to hurt him when she dies. She introduces Augustus to her favorite book, and he forms a plan in which they will travel to Amsterdam together (using the \"Wish\" given to him by a foundation for children with cancer) to meet the reclusive and mysterious author and find out what happens after the book\'s end. They are able to take this trip, but when they arrive to meet the author he is drunk and surly. At the end of the trip, Augustus reveals to Hazel that his cancer has come back and is much worse than the previous time. They return home and Augustus has to go through many tough medications. Hazel stays by his side until his death. The author attends Augustus\'s funeral and tries to apologize to Hazel; she realizes that his book, which is about a young girl with cancer, was based on his daughter who died. Hazel copes with Augustus\'s death, comforted by a letter Augustus sent to the author about her before his death that she found. IV : Themes [Incurable sicknesses] - Thyroid cancer: Hazel - Osteosarcoma: Augustus - Eye cancer: Isaac - Brain cancer: Caroline - Lechomia: Anna in *An Imperial Affliction* Healthy children do not really get what death truly means. However, sick kids constantly live with death and play with life limits all the time. [Love and friendship.] Love Friendship ---------------------------- -------------------- Hazel + Augustus Isaac and Augustus Isaac + Monica Hazel and Kaitlyn Augustus + Caroline (dead) The characters in the fault in our stars have different attitudes relating to love and friendship. For example, Hazel refuses to create any relationships with people out of her family, because she is scared she might hurt them when she dies. On the other hand, Augustus is not scared to dive headfirst when he falls in love with Hazel, not caring about the fact she might hurt him when she dies. [Death.] Because the book is about youths with a terminal illness, the meaning of life and death is particularly important to the characters. They all have different views of it. Augustus believes that to have a good life one must accomplish something grand, remarkable, and that after life there is *Capital S something*. Hazel, on the other hand, wants to do as little harm as she can in the world and does not seem to believe in anything after life. [Lack of freedom.] Unable to make decisions for themselves. Cancer is not even an antagonist; it is part of the characters. Normal teenagers have more freedom. Never gonna be possible for Isaac, Gus, Hazel or Anna. [Meaning of life and death.] - Augustus : - Good life : accomplish something - Death : *Capital S something* - Hazel : - Life: waiting for death to come. - Death: doubting there is anything after life. - Isaac : - Life : love, friendship, happiness - Death : Heaven V : Opinion I really liked this book. The writing is remarkably real. John Green tells the story very fairly with the right amount of emotion. I got appealed by the characters and recognised myself in Hazel. I got sad when August died. The characters are young, funny and appealing. We are mad at the universe for condemning them to die prematurely. Unlike Hazel, Augustus is not sparing in bold quotes about falling in love. This attitude goes hand in hand with his desire to accomplish things, \"you only live once.\"
