WORLD WAR 2 ( 1939 - 1945 ) Jan 30, 1933 - Adolf Hitler becomes chancellor of Germany. Oct 25, 1936 - Nazi Germany & Fascist Italy form the Rome-Berlin Axis Treaty. Nov 25, 1936 - Nazi Germany & Imperial Japan signed the Anti-Comintern Pact. a. This pact was against communism and Russia. July 7, 1937 - Japan invades China. March 12, 1938 - Hitler adds Australia to Germany. Also called The Anschluss. BEGINNING OF WORLD WAR II Sep 1, 1939 - Germany invades Poland. World war II begins. Sep 3, 1939 - France and Britain declared war on germany. Apr 9 to June 9 1940 - Germany invades and takes control of Denmark and Norway. May 10 to June 22 1940 - Germany uses quick strikes called “Blitzkrieg” meaning Lightning War. It took over Western Europe, Netherlands, Belgium, and May 30 1940 - Winston Churchill becomes the leader of the British Government. AXIS POWER - The alliance began to form in 1936. - Oct 15, 1936 Germany and Italy signed a friendship treaty that formed the Rome-German Axis. After signing the treaty, the Italian Dictator Benito Mussolini used the term axis to refer to their alliance. - Sep 22, 1940 - Germany, Italy, and Japan signed the Tripartite pact creating the Axis Alliance. - Italy enters the war as a member of the Axis Powers. - The major Axis Powers were: a. Germany - The leader was ADOLF HITLER. b. Italy - The leader was BENITO MUSSOLINI c. Japan - The leader was EMPEROR HIROHITO THE HOLOCAUST - A genocide orchestrated by Adolft Hitler’s Nazi regime during World War II. - The targeted groups were Jews, Roma (Gypsies), Disabled individuals, Slavs, Political dissidents, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Homosexuals. - Methods of persecution used were Forced labor, Ghettos, Concentration camps, Mass shooting, and Gas chambers in extermination camps like Auschwitz-Birkenau. - Approximately 6 million jews were murdered. The total death toll along with other groups is estimated to be around 11 million. - In 1935, the Nazis implemented the Nuremberg Laws which stripped Jews from their rights and citizenship. NOTES TO REMEMBER - World War II was fought between two major groups of nations. Axis Powers and Allied Powers. THE ALLIED POWERS - At the start of World War II, Russia and Germany were friends. However, on June 22 1941, Hitler ordered a surprise attack on Russia. - The allied powers were: a. Great Britain - The leader was Winston Churchill b. United States - The leader was Franklin D. Roosevelt c. Russia - The leader was Joseph Stalin SEQUENCE OF DATE June 10, 1940 - Germany launches an air attack on Great Britain. Lasted until the end of october. Known as “Battle of Britain” June 22, 1941 - Germany and the axis powers attack Russia with a huge force of over 4 million troops. Dec 7, 1941 - The Japanese attack the US Navy in Pearl Harbor. The next day the US enters World War II on the side of the allies. June 4, 1942 - The US Navy defeats the Japanese at the battle of Midway. Jul 10, 1943 - The Allies invade and take the island of Sicily. Sep 3, 1943 - Italy surrenders. Germany helps Mussolini to escape, set up a government in Northern Italy. Jun 6, 1944 - Allied forces invade France and push back the Germans. Aug 25, 1944 - Paris is liberated from German Control. Dec 16, 1944 - The Germans launched a large attack in the Battle of Bulge. They lost to the allies. Feb 19, 1945 - US Marines invade the island of Iwo Jima. After a fierce battle they captured the island. Apr 12, 1945 - US President Franklin dies. President Harry Truman took over. Mar 22, 1945 - US Third Army under General Patton crosses the Rhine River. Apr 30, 1945 - Adolf Hitler commits suicide because Germany lost the war. May 7, 1945 - Germany surrenders to the allies. Aug 6, 1945 - US drops the Atomic Bomb in Hiroshima, Japan. Aug 9, 1945 - Another atomic bomb is dropped in Nagasaki, Japan. Sep 2, 1945 - Japan surrenders to the US General Douglass MacArthur and the Allies. NOTES - The TREATY OF POTSDAM officially ended World War II. - Many leaders from Japan and Germany were brought to trial. - After the war, much of Europe and eastern Asia had been destroyed due to the bombing and fighting. - Many country’s borders needed to be set and governments re-established where Germany and Japan had taken over.
