SLPA Exam Blueprint PREAMBLE The speech-language pathology assistant (SLP-A) supports the speech-language pathologist by engaging in tasks that are planned, delegated, and supervised by the speech-language pathologist. In so doing, the SLP-A provides exceptional patient care, provides speech-language pathology services, and enhances the productivity of the speech-language pathology practice to improve patient experiences and services in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations. ASHA’s certification exam for SLP-As will test an applicant’s knowledge, skills, and abilities on the tasks listed herein. Content Duties and Tasks Weighting Percentage A Providing Services 75% Self-identify as SLPAs to families, students, patients, 1 clients, staff, and others (e.g., name badges, verbally, documentation) Comply with confidentiality and privacy regulations (e.g., 2 HIPAA, FERPA) 3 Comply with reimbursement requirements 4 Comply with SLPA Scope of Practice Administer speech screenings without clinical 5 interpretation Administer language screenings without clinical 6 interpretation Administer hearing screenings without clinical 7 interpretation Administer developmental screenings without clinical 8 interpretation (e.g., cognitive, motor, adaptive) Administer oral mechanism screenings without clinical 9 interpretation Assist patients/caregivers in completing case history or 10 other relevant forms (e.g. questionnaires, outcome measures) Assist the SLP during assessment of students, patients, and 11 clients exclusive of administration and/or clinical interpretation Assist the SLP in identifying the need for linguistically and 12 culturally appropriate translation/interpretation services Assist the SLP in utilizing linguistically and culturally 13 appropriate translation/interpretation services Follow supervising SLP-developed treatment plans or 14 protocols SLPA Exam Blueprint Assist the SLP in designing evidence-based treatment 15 activities to address student, patient, and client goals Follow supervising SLP-developed treatment plans or 16 protocols to provide direct speech therapy to students, patients, and clients Follow supervising SLP-developed treatment plans or 17 protocols to provide direct language therapy to students, patients, and clients Follow supervising SLP-developed treatment plans or 18 protocols to provide direct voice therapy to students, patients, and clients Follow supervising SLP-developed treatment plans or 19 protocols to provide direct fluency therapy to students, patients, and clients Follow supervising SLP-developed treatment plans or 20 protocols to provide direct cognitive therapy to students, patients, and clients Follow supervising SLP-developed treatment plans or 21 protocols to provide direct pragmatic therapy to students, patients, and clients 22 Utilize behavioral management techniques Modify treatment activities based on the observed 23 physical, mental, and/or behavioral status of the student, patient, and client as instructed by the SLP 24 Report modified treatment activities to the supervising SLP Document student, patient, and client performance (e.g., 25 collect data; prepare charts, records, and graphs) Report data and observations of student, patient, and 26 client performance to supervising SLP Program augmentative and alternative communication 27 devices Provide instruction in the use of augmentative and 28 alternative communication systems Report and gather data and observations of student, 29 patient, and client performance during meetings with the supervising SLP present B Providing Administrative Support 20% Prepare therapeutic and educational materials (e.g., visual 1 aids, adapted materials, home programs) 2 Perform scheduling activities Create and maintain student, patient, and client 3 charts/records for the SLP 4 Perform checks and maintenance of equipment SLPA Exam Blueprint Maintain inventories of supplies (e.g., rotating stock, 5 ordering) 6 Follow safety and infection control procedures Support the SLP in their supervisory role (e.g., 7 documentation, training, compliance) Support the supervising SLP with in-service training, public 8 relations programs, and marketing programs C Participating in Prevention and Advocacy 5% Provide information on awareness and prevention of 1 communication, developmental, and/or swallowing disorders to at risk individuals and their caregivers Advocate for individuals and caregivers with respect to societal expectations, cultural beliefs, and linguistic 2 differences (e.g., difference versus disorder, accent modification) Provide information to emergency responders regarding 3 individuals who have communication, developmental, and/or swallowing disorders Advocate at the local, state, and national levels for public 4 policies to improve access to services and research funding TOTAL 100%
