Duties and Tasks

• SLPA's duties are to engage in tasks planned, delegated, and supervised by a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)
• Providing Services accounts for 75% of the exam content
• Providing Administrative Support accounts for 20% of the exam content
• Participating in Prevention and Advocacy accounts for 5% of the exam content

Providing Services: Self-Identification

• SLPA's must self-identify as SLPAs to families, students, patients, clients, staff, and others (e.g., name badges, verbally, documentation)

Providing Services: Compliance

• Comply with confidentiality and privacy regulations (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA)
• Comply with reimbursement requirements
• Comply with SLPA Scope of Practice

Providing Services: Screenings and Assessments

• Administer speech screenings without clinical interpretation
• Administer language screenings without clinical interpretation
• Administer hearing screenings without clinical interpretation
• Administer developmental screenings without clinical interpretation (e.g., cognitive, motor, adaptive)
• Administer oral mechanism screenings without clinical interpretation
• Assist patients/caregivers in completing case history or other relevant forms (e.g. questionnaires, outcome measures)
• Assist the SLP during assessment of students, patients, and clients exclusive of administration and/or clinical interpretation
• Assist the SLP in identifying the need for linguistically and culturally appropriate translation/interpretation services
• Assist the SLP in utilizing linguistically and culturally appropriate translation/interpretation services

Providing Services: Treatment

• Follow supervising SLP-developed treatment plans or protocols
• Assist the SLP in designing evidence-based treatment activities to address student, patient, and client goals
• Follow supervising SLP-developed treatment plans or protocols to provide direct speech therapy to students, patients, and clients
• Follow supervising SLP-developed treatment plans or protocols to provide direct language therapy to students, patients, and clients
• Follow supervising SLP-developed treatment plans or protocols to provide direct voice therapy to students, patients, and clients
• Follow supervising SLP-developed treatment plans or protocols to provide direct fluency therapy to students, patients, and clients
• Follow supervising SLP-developed treatment plans or protocols to provide direct cognitive therapy to students, patients, and clients
• Follow supervising SLP-developed treatment plans or protocols to provide direct pragmatic therapy to students, patients, and clients
• Utilize behavioral management techniques
• Modify treatment activities based on the observed physical, mental, and/or behavioral status of the student, patient, and client as instructed by the SLP
• Report modified treatment activities to the supervising SLP
• Document student, patient, and client performance (e.g., collect data; prepare charts, records, and graphs)
• Report data and observations of student, patient, and client performance to supervising SLP

Providing Services: Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

• Program augmentative and alternative communication devices
• Provide instruction in the use of augmentative and alternative communication systems
• Report and gather data and observations of student, patient, and client performance during meetings with the supervising SLP present

Providing Administrative Support

• Prepare therapeutic and educational materials (e.g., visual aids, adapted materials, home programs)
• Perform scheduling activities
• Create and maintain student, patient, and client charts/records for the SLP
• Perform checks and maintenance of equipment
• Maintain inventories of supplies (e.g., rotating stock, ordering)
• Follow safety and infection control procedures
• Support the SLP in their supervisory role (e.g., documentation, training, compliance)
• Support the supervising SLP with in-service training, public relations programs, and marketing programs

Participating in Prevention and Advocacy

• Provide information on awareness and prevention of communication, developmental, and/or swallowing disorders to at-risk individuals and their caregivers
• Advocate for individuals and caregivers with respect to societal expectations, cultural beliefs, and linguistic differences (e.g., difference versus disorder, accent modification)
• Provide information to emergency responders regarding individuals who have communication, developmental, and/or swallowing disorders
• Advocate at the local, state, and national levels for public policies to improve access to services and research funding
