Description of various health management information systems used at all levels of the health system and their linkage will be made. **Objectives: The student will:** 1\. understand the basic concepts of health management information systems. 2\. describe health management information systems. 3\. explain the steps in developing health management information systems. 4\. describe the various health management information systems used at the district, regional and national levels. 5\. describe the importance of health management information systems to quality service delivery. 6\. Understand the concept and uses of indicators **Course Description** The course will describe the basic principles of a health information system and its application to management of health systems **Learning Outcomes** **Educational** - understand the basic concepts of health management information systems. - describe health management information systems. - explain the steps in developing health management information systems. - describe the various health management information systems used at the district, regional and national levels. - describe the importance of health management information systems to quality service delivery. - Understand the concept and uses of indicators **Skills-based** - Create the design of a hospital information system - Make simple calculations of indicators - Identify who gets sick in the context of the epidemiological questions **Practice/competencies/vocational-based outcomes** Will be able to use computer and software to do the data entry screens, enter and analyse the data **Course Content** basic concepts of health management information systems, the steps in developing health management information systems, concept and uses of indicators **Teaching and Learning** - **Teaching Strategy** -learner-centred methods. \... -lecture method. - **Teaching Mode** Formal: lectures will be given to students via the UHAS on-line Learning Management System, accompanied by tutorials and webinars, with some independent study. Problem-based learning: will allow students to become more active in their learning as they work out which information, they need to find out to solve a particular problem.  **associated lab / Field-based practicals or vocational trainng elements** Use of the laptop by every student to do course work **Course Assessment:** First make a general statement about the different forms of assessment to include: 1) Formative (non-scoring) and 2) Summative Assessment. Summative assessment includes coursework (interim assessments) and examination. Then indicate what contribution each form of summative assessment is worth (e.g. CW total=40%; exam=60%. Then indicate in the table below the details of each form of summative assessment, providing essential information that is clear t the student as to what is expected of them. Note: Assessments should help provide evidence of the attainment of the different learning outcomes for the course. +-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+ | **Type/Meth | **Weighting | **Word | **Outline | **Date** | | od | %** | Length (for | Details** | | | of | | essays/case | | **(for each | | Assessment* | | studies | | item of | | * | | etc)** | | assessment) | | | | | | ** | +-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+ | **Course | **10** | **Formative | **Describe | **Week 1** | | work | | / | the basic | | | (IA1)** | | Summative** | concepts of | | | | | | health | | | | | | management | | | | | | information | | | | | | systems** | | +-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+ | **Coursewor | **10** | **Formative | **explain | **Week 3** | | k | | / | the steps | | | (IA2)** | | Summative** | in | | | | | | developing | | | | | | health | | | | | | management | | | | | | information | | | | | | systems** | | +-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+ | **Coursewor | **10** | **Formative | **describe | **Week 5** | | k | | / | the various | | | (IA3)** | | Summative** | health | | | | | | management | | | | | | information | | | | | | systems | | | | | | used at the | | | | | | district, | | | | | | regional | | | | | | and | | | | | | national | | | | | | levels** | | +-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+ | **Coursewor | **10** | **Formative | **Understan | **Week 7** | | k | | / | d | | | (IA4)** | | Summative** | the concept | | | | | | and uses of | | | | | | indicators* | | | | | | * | | +-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+ | **Examinati | **60** | **Summative | **General | **Week 13** | | on** | | ** | examination | | | | | | of course** | | +-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+ **\ ** **Indicative Texts (Course Readings):** **ISBN Number** **Author** **Date** **Title** **Publisher** -------------------------- --------------------------------------- ---------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------- ISBN-13: 978-1447142362 Magnuson, J.
