LESSON 1 INTRODUCTION TO What is STS? SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY – is the study of how science and technology influences society. These influences can be positive and negative. Through this field, society is analyzed on its reaction and incorporation of science and technology. SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY- is an exciting interdisciplinary field of study rooted in the history, Philosophy, anthropology, and sociology of science and technology ( and medicine) It examines deep cultural roots of our techno- scientific society and addresses pressing public policy issues. WHAT IS SCIENCE ? The word science has been derived from a Latin word “ SCIENTIA” which means KNOWLEDGE. The KNOWLEDGE gained through “OBSERVATION” and EXPERIMENTATIONS” is known as science. Any SYSTEMATIC knowledge or practice. A system of acquiring knowledge based ON THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD. Organized body of knowledge gain trough RESEARCH. WHAT IS SCIENCE ? The human attempt to understand the natural world, with or without concern for practical uses of knowledge. Tries to discover the facts and relationships and then tries to create theories make sense of these facts and relationships. Theories, Principles and laws Hence, human beings have persistently observed and studied the natural and physical world in order to find meanings and seek answers to many questions. WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY ? The word technology came from two Greek words Techne- means skills, craftsmanship, art and Logos- means discourse, reason Are things that are created by human that can make our lives easier or solve problems. Is the collection of techniques, skills, methods and processes in the production of goods or services on the accomplishment of objectives, such scientific investigation. WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY ? As a human activity, technology is on the same level as art, politics, economics, and etc. Relationship between Science and technology SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY Explores for the purpose Explores for the purpose of of knowing making something useful from that knowledge.( doing) Science derives technology by making new technology possible through Scientific break through Comparison Between Science and Technology SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY -organized way of gathering -technology is the practical usage of the knowledge through various laws of science for different purposes. observations and experiments. -it is putting scientific knowledge into -a process of exploring new practice. knowledge -its primary aim is to invent and develop -it focuses on discovering the laws of nature techniques. -science explores for the purpose of -it explores for the purpose of making knowing. something useful from that knowledge. -without science, technology could -without technology, some science not proceed. experiments would not be possible. ROLE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 1. Alter the way people live, connect, communicate and transact, with profound effects on economic development. 2. Have the power to better the lives of poor people in developing countries. 3. Interventions for cognitive enhancement, proton cancer therapy and genetic engineering among others. 4. The impact of science and technology on society is evident. But society also influences science RELATIONSHIP OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY Technology changes how we can behave. The society promotes technological advancement and scientific research. Technology enables us to do more scientific research, and science teaches us about the kinds of technologies we could one day develop and ways to do so.
