GS Reference Card M MGSSSI : School Year 2020-2021 Common Diseases of the Bones >Sprain - also known as a torn ligament, is the stretching or I tearing of ligaments within a joint, often caused by trauma abruptly forcing the joint beyond its functional range of SS motion. >Dislocation – is an injury to a joint that forces the ends of your bones out of position. GS *Don't try to move a dislocated joint or force it back into place. This can damage the joint and its surrounding muscles, ligaments, nerves or blood vessels. Put ice on the injured joint. This can help reduce swelling by controlling internal bleeding and the buildup of fluids in and around the injured joint. M >Fracture - is a partial or complete break in the bone. A fracture happens when more force is applied to the bone than the bone can absorb. Two types of fractures 1. A closed fracture is also called a simple fracture. In a closed fracture, the broken bone doesn't break your skin. MGSSSI : School Year 2020-2021 2. An open fracture is also called a compound fracture. In an open fracture, the ends of the broken bone tear your skin. I >Rickets - is the softening and weakening of bones in SS children, usually because of an extreme and prolonged vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium and phosphorus from food. GS Osteoporosis - is a condition that occurs when bones are weaker or less dense than they should be. Weaker bones are generally more likely to break or fracture. Osteoporosis means “porous bone.” >Scoliosis – abnormal curvature of the backbone. M MGSSSI : School Year 2020-2021 >Arthritis - is the swelling and tenderness of one or more of your joints. The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain and stiffness, which typically worsen with age.
