1 Chapter 2 INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATIO N 2 Generally; Communication is an important aspect of human behaviour and symbolizes the ability to convey opinions, feelings, information, body language, signs and ideas through words which may be written or spoken. 3 What is communication?  Communication is a process to convey our message to others.  Message that produces response is called as communication, e.g: ‘I am delivering you a message (many ways) and you answer me for that’, (replying (many ways) to me is called communication). Communication Definition 4  Communication is derived from the English translation, the communication is originated from the Latin word ‘communicare’.  Communicare means to make common or create equality  Communication is fundamental to the social process. (Schramm ,1954) Communication Definition 5  Communication can be defined as social interaction through messages (Gerbner ,1967).  Dissemination of information, ideas, attitudes or emotions of a person or group to another, usually through certain symbols (Theodorson ,1969)  An interaction process that displays the message and the meaning of communication (Watzlawick, Beavin & Jackson, 1967). Scientist describes communicating as an attitude which involves the application of knowledge and logic. Discussion, argument and analysis are vital parts of science of communicating. Elements of fairness, equality and democracy are built into it.
