CHRISTIAN LIVING 12 QUARTER 2 LESSON 1: SACRAMENTS OF HEALING “It is only God who can forgive sins” Mk 2:7 What is a Sacrament of Penance? It is also called the sacrament of conversion, the sacrament of confession, the sacrament of forgiveness, the sacrament of reconciliation, or the sacrament of contrition. The part of the penitent in this sacrament is summed up under threefold heading --- repentance or contrition, confession, and satisfaction. CONTRITION OR REPETANCE: is the first step to the celebration of the sacrament. It is defined as “sorrow of the soul and detestation for the sin committed, together with the resolution not to sin again” (CCC 1415) - If the sorrow is due to charity, that is, when one is sorry for the offense caused to God, it is called perfect contrition. - If the sorrow is due to fear of the deserved punishment, it is called Imperfect contrition or attrition. CONFESSION: refers to the actual act of acknowledging our sins before the Lord. It is the act of self-accusation of sins committed after baptism, made to the confessor or priest to obtain sacramental absolution. SATISFACTION: is the penance imposed on the penitent by the confessor for the sins made known to him in confessions. The penitent has to “satisfy” or atone for his or her sins. “Receive the Holy Spirit whose sins you forgive are forgiven them , and whose sins you retain are retained” – Jn 20:22-23 We see that in this power is twofold --- to forgive sins or to retain them. NECESSITY OF THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE The sacrament of Penance restores our relationship with God. It is necessary as means of salvation for all who have committed mortal sins after Baptism or after their last confession. EFFECTS OF THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE 1. It forgives all sins, mortal or venial; 2. Reconciliation with God through restoration of sanctifying grace 3. Reconciliation with the Church 4. Remission of the eternal punishment incurred by mortal sins; 5. The restoration of the merits of our good works if they have been lost by mortal sins 6. Peace and serenity of conscience 7. The sacramental grace of Penance is a spiritual force to fight temptations To sum up the effects of the sacrament --- we are at peace with God again. WHAT ARE A SACRAMENTS OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK? The sacraments of the anointing of the sick were instituted by Jesus Christ specifically to heal the sick, body and soul. This sacrament is given to us by Christ to comfort us in our suffering. It strengthens us during our suffering and illness, restoring our wellness and giving us hope not to falter in our faith and to love God, especially when death comes. HEALING is central to the public ministry of Jesus. It should be understood not as necessarily a cure. “Healing is holistic preservation in spirit, soul, and body” (cf. 1 Thes 5:23) Nature and Institution The Anointing of the Sick or Extreme Unction is a sacrament in which, through the anointing of the blessed oil and the prayer of the priest, the faithful who can commit personal sins and who are seriously ill receive of souls, at times, body health as well. Matter and Form of the Anointing of the Sick The MATTER of the sacrament is the anointing of the forehead and hands of the sick with oil of olive blessed by the bishop on Chrism Mass. The FORM of the sacrament is the prayer prescribed in the liturgical books of the Roman Rite (1972). It reads “ Through this holy anointing and His most loving mercy, may the Lord assist you by the grace of the Holy Spirit , so that when you have been freed from your sins, He may save you and in His goodness raise you up” EFFECTS OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK The special grace of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick has its effects (cf. CCC 1532) 1. The uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and those of the whole church. 2. The strengthening of peace and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings of illness or old age. 3. The forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the sacrament of Penance. 4. The restoration of health if it is conducive to the salvation of his soul. 5. The preparation for passing over to eternal life. THE NECESSITY OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not necessary for salvation, but it is wrong to neglect it. This sacrament brings us great consolation and peace of soul.
