Sacraments of Healing
- Sacrament of Penance: Also known as the sacrament of conversion, confession, forgiveness, or reconciliation.
- It involves three parts: repentance/contrition, confession, and satisfaction
- Contrition/Repentance: Sorrow for sin, with a resolution not to sin again. Perfect contrition is sorrow for offending God; imperfect contrition (attrition) is sorrow from fear of punishment.
- Confession: Acknowledging sins to a priest to receive absolution (forgiveness).
- Satisfaction: Penance imposed by the priest to atone for sins. Receiving the sacrament involves a decision from the individual to receive absolution, forgive themselves & atone for their past behavior
- Necessity: Necessary for salvation for those who have committed mortal sins after baptism or last confession.
- Effects: Forgives mortal and venial sins, restores relationship with God and the Church, and removes the eternal punishment for mortal sins.
Anointing of the Sick
- Nature and Institution: A sacrament for the sick, offering spiritual and possibly physical healing. It is holistic, focusing on the person’s body, soul, and spirit.
- Matter and Form: Oil blessed by a bishop is used to anoint the forehead and hands. The prayer during the ritual has a prescribed form.
- Necessity: Not necessary for salvation, but neglecting it is wrong. Offers consolation and peace of soul.
- Effects: Unites the sick person to Christ's suffering, strengthens them for illness/old age, forgives sins if couldn't confess, restores health if conducive to salvation, prepares for eternal life.
