Lesson 1 WHY STUDY ART? to experience something new and something more. WHAT IS ART? Art is not new to us Art is the product of man’s inventiveness and creativity Art is a wide range of man’s activity from expression down to creating tangible or intangible things. Latin word “ars” meaning ability or skill or to do or manmade. Italian word “artis” means craftsmanship, skill, mastery of forms, inventiveness. ART IS ROOTED IN CULTURE Art is rooted in culture, and it ties our present from the past and connects us to the future. Artworks serve as a form of communication of ideas and emotions through political, philosophical and spiritual matters. Arts bind the identity of one’s culture, which makes them unique from the rest. Arts mirrors culture. ART IS UNIVERSAL Art is as old as humans Art immortalizes man and his marvelous achievements. ART IS NOT NATURE! ART INVOLVES EXPERIENCE Experience is the actual doing of something. The perfection of art appreciation will never be possible without experiencing art. All art requires experience. CHARACTERISTICS OF EXPERIENCE Experience of art is subjective Our judgement of art is highly personal and individual. We should not expect others to agree with our own experience with art. Art experience accompanied emotional response Initial reaction in such experience of art is inevitable. We may either like or dislike it. ART APPRECIATION Art appreciation or aesthetic education is the capacity to understand works of art and experience a certain enjoyment in creating arts Art appreciation aims at seeing the role of art in society. Art appreciation puts us into the heights of good taste. It deals with our encounter with the artworks and the artist and how we are affected with it. IMAGINATION Imagination is envisioning ideas that are not present in reality Visualizing the impossible or things that are not present in our senses. CREATIVITY Creativity uses imagination to represent new ideas and create a physical embodiment which is beneficial and with value. It is the unveiling of the impossible to possible EXPRESSION The process of making known one’s thoughts or feelings.
