Osan Brief Background of the Research Topic It cannot be denied that most people do not like vegetables and are not getting enough health benefits that come with them, the World Health Organization(WHO) revealed that approximately 16 million (1.0%) DALYs and 1.7 million (2.8%) of deaths worldwide are attributable to low fruit and vegetable consumption. The health benefits of these vegetables or greens come from their chlorophyll, a pigment that gives plants the green color and contains vitamins A, C, E, and K, and β-carotene. Chlorophyll also contains magnesium, potassium, iron, and calcium. According to some medical research, taking the recommended amount(200-300 mg) of chlorophyll your body needs daily can be helpful for skin conditions, body odors, fighting certain kinds of cancer, and many more. The product of this research uses the beneficial properties of chlorophyll in the form of palatable gummies to supply the nutrients the human body needs which we usually get from eating greens and vegetables. Existing Problem As we can observe, a lot of people, young or old, suffer from certain health issues that may be caused by insufficient nutrients in their bodies. We've also found out from statistics that quite a lot of people do not eat greens or vegetables leading to a lack of nutrition. This could lead to problems like bad body odor, excessive sweating, poor gut health, etc. that may appear small but could lead to more fatal issues in the long run, if not mended or prevented. Although there are other similar supplements in the market, one of the issues that the majority of consumers are experiencing is the high cost. For supplements that give great benefits, it is not marketed cheaply. Thus, a lot of people, especially those in the lower class, cannot easily access this healthcare. The added preservatives of the chlorophyll gummies that are already on the market also contribute to their higher cost and even effectiveness. Most of those chlorophyll supplements use a lot of other preservatives that may cause the effectiveness of the actual chlorophyll to go down. This leads to our next point, accessibility, since it is mostly not that affordable in the market it is also not easily accessible in the local store. It could be due to a low demand, low popularity, or high cost that similar products or supplements are not widely marketed. All of these are reasons that pushed our team to create a great product that everyone can use and benefit from. Chlorophyll Gummy caters to the great benefits of chlorophyll at an affordable cost and assured healthier components. Previous Research Solutions or products developed Several studies have explored the antioxidant properties of foods and beverages that aim to identify natural sources of antioxidants to help reduce oxidative stress in the human body. Previous research found the ability of food materials including vegetables, to capture and reduce the presence of undesirable odors. The study “The Role of Food Ingredients in Reducing Volatile Sulfur” (Negishi et al., 2002) revealed that vegetables, such as spinach and lettuce were effective in reducing the odor of diallyl disulfide, a sulfur-containing compound with a pungent smell. These foods appeared to reduce the diallyl disulfide odor through various mechanisms, including physical and chemical interactions between the volatile sulfur compounds and the food itself. In the critical overview of the book “Medicinal Uses of Chlorophyll” (Husen et al.,2011) It was found that certain foods, like spinach and asparagus, can break down sulfur compounds through a process. This means that these foods have natural enzymes that help them break down the sulfur compounds. Foods can neutralize odors in several ways: a) Physically — by absorbing the odors. b) Chemically — by reacting with the odor molecules. c) Enzymatically — by using natural enzymes to break down the compounds that cause the smell. Moreover, The case study “Preventing Cancer with Chlorophyll-rich Foods” (Mishra et al. n.d) states that “When we consume chlorophyll from plant foods, it changes the stomach and is absorbed into the bloodstream. Chlorophyll and its derivatives then have a range of health benefits, including acting as antioxidants, protecting against DNA damage, supporting detoxification, and possibly helping to prevent cancer by influencing cell behavior.” Chlorophyll and its derivatives appear to offer a wide range of health benefits, including antioxidant protection, DNA damage prevention, detoxification support, and potential cancer prevention. While further research, especially in human clinical trials, is needed to understand the extent of these benefits fully, the current evidence suggests that chlorophyll can play a role in promoting cellular health, reducing oxidative stress, and supporting the body’s natural defense mechanisms against harmful toxins and carcinogens. Chlorophyll shows promise as a natural way to help prevent cancer. Studies suggest it can block harmful toxins, reduce damage to cells, and even slow down tumor growth. Because chlorophyll has low toxicity and is found in many green vegetables, it can be a safe addition to a healthy diet. According to McQuistan et al., (2012), “The association of diets rich in phytochemicals with cancer prevention has intensified interest in chlorophyll as a class of plant pigments with potential chemopreventive effects. Considering the traditional use of chlorophyll derivatives in medicine and the low toxicity, these pigments are attractive cancer-preventative and potentially therapeutic agents. Research highlights chlorophyll's ability in vitro and in vivo as well as potential mechanisms of cancer.” However, more research into humans is needed to understand how effective it is. In the meantime, eating a diet rich in leafy greens may offer benefits for cancer prevention. Proposed Research Solution: Considering the issues presented in the research problem, the researchers created a tasty way to intake chlorophyll without the need to eat green vegetables themselves, this can be possible by infusing chlorophyll into gummies. So, Chlorophyll Gummy is created. By taking the chlorophyll gummies, a gummy infused with chlorophyll powder, consumers can prevent certain health issues from happening or worsening. This would solve the problem of insufficient nutrients in the human body and get the health benefits of chlorophyll. The product also ensures a healthier component staying true to the effectiveness of the natural chlorophyll and no other extra preservatives and chemicals. The researchers found the most sustainable and cost-efficient way to make the product, in which the product can be marketed as budget-friendly. The researchers, through its budget-friendly price and great health benefits, will be able to confidently market the product to the general masses and make it easily accessible in local stores due to its cheap and efficient production while also contributing to the local community, especially farmers. Significance of the proposed research solution Prevents health issues: The proposed solution highlights the significance of chlorophyll in stabilizing health and preventing serious issues. Chlorophyll has demonstrated potential benefits, including cancer prevention, where it binds to carcinogens, reducing their absorption and protecting DNA from damage. Its antioxidant properties combat oxidative stress, which is linked to various diseases. By incorporating chlorophyll-rich foods or supplements into diets, individuals can enhance their overall health, potentially lowering the risk of chronic conditions and improving immune function. Consumers Consumers may be drawn to purchasing chlorophyll for its potential health benefits. Chlorophyll is marketed as a supplement that is believed to support detoxification, improve digestion, and boost energy levels. It is affordable and accessible making it convenient for the consumers to purchase. Economic Impact The economic impact of chlorophyll is significant in both agriculture and the business industry. In agriculture, more Vegetables and greens will be sold and used in manufacturing. This will bring income to the farming industry and farmers. On the other hand, once it is manufactured, people will start buying the product for its benefits and low cost bringing more revenue to businesses without compromising the environment due to the safest organic methods. To Future Scientists and Researchers As our understanding of chlorophyll continues to evolve, future researchers have an important opportunity to explore its diverse applications further. Investigating the chlorophyll of algae and other plants, its role in plant health, and its potential uses in sustainable technologies will be crucial in addressing global challenges such as food security, climate change, and the demand for eco-friendly products. The ongoing exploration of chlorophyll's properties offers promising avenues for innovation in agriculture, medicine, and green industries. By advancing this research, future scientists can contribute to more efficient, sustainable solutions for the world.
