Psychoanalytic Theory Sigmund freud Daniela Dela Peña Alessandra Empuesto PUP QUEZON CITY CAMPUS Theory Proponent - Born May 6, 1856, Freiberg, Moravia, Austrian Empire - Died September 23, 1939, London, England - Father of psychoanalysis, a method for treating mental illness and a theory explaining human behavior. - In founding psychoanalysis, Freud developed therapeutic techniques such as the use of free association and discovered transference, establishing its central role in the analytic process. PUP QUEZON CITY CAMPUS Sigmund Freud’s Theories & Contributions - Psychoanalytic Theory: Freud is best known for developing psychoanalysis, a therapeutic technique for treating mental health disorders by exploring unconscious thoughts and feelings. - Unconscious Mind: Freud (1900, 1905) developed a topographical model of the mind, describing the features of the mind’s structure and function. Freud used the analogy of an iceberg to describe the three levels of the mind. - Personality: Freud proposed a tripartite model of the human mind, composed of the id, ego, and superego. - Psychosexual Development: Freud’s controversial theory of psychosexual development suggests that early childhood experiences and stages (oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital) shape our adult personality and behavior. - Defense Mechanisms: Freud proposed several defense mechanisms, like repression and projection, which the ego employs to handle the tension and conflicts among the id, superego, and the demands of reality. PUP QUEZON CITY CAMPUS PSYCHOANALYTIC THEORY Psychoanalytic theory of personality argues that human behavior is the result of the interactions among three components parts of mind: the id, ego, superego. The theory places great emphasis on the role of unconscious psychological conflicts in shaping behavior and personality. PUP QUEZON CITY CAMPUS THE PSYCHOANALYTIC PERSPECTIVES The unconscious mind is defined as a reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories that outside of conscious awareness. THE PSYCHOANALYTIC PERSPECTIVES PERSONALITY STRUCTURE ID The unconscious part of the personality structure that contains a human's basic, instinctual drives. The only component of personality that is present from birth. It is the source of our bodily needs, wants, desires and impulses, particularly our sexual and aggressive drives. EGO The conscious component of personality that is responsible for dealing with the reality. Operates on the reality principle, which strives to satisfy the id's desires in realistic, logically and in socially appropriate ways. SUPEREGO Provides guidelines for making judgements, it enables to differentiate between good and bad and what is wrong. Superego represents the norms & qualities of the individual, his family and the society and us an ethical constraint on the behavior. PUP QUEZON CITY CAMPUS The Stages of Psychosexual Development - According to the famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, children go through a series of psychosexual stages that lead to the development of the adult personality. Freud's stages of human development, which consisted of five psychosexual stages of development, described how personality developed over the course of childhood. - One important thing to note is that contemporary psychoanalytic theories of personality development have incorporated and emphasized ideas about internalized relationships and interactions and the complex ways in which we maintain our sense of self into the models that began with Freud. PUP QUEZON CITY CAMPUS The stages of Psychosexual Development PUP QUEZON CITY CAMPUS Defense Mechanisms Freud’s believes that anxiety was produced by conflicts between this drives from the id, and the constraints of reality or the superego. And in instances when the ego is not capable of resolving the conflict defense mechanism would be used. Defense mechanisms are unconscious protective behaviors that work to reduce anxiety.
