SH1904 COURSE TOPICS OUTLINE This course will focus on developing your understanding, skills, and responsibility as a modern media and information literate individual. You will also be taught the fundamentals of computer science as a needed skill in the modern world. UNIT 1: Background of Media and Information: The development of media and information is influenced by societal trends and the literacy of its users. I. TOPICS TO BE DISCUSSED A. Evolution of Traditional to New Media A.1 How and Why Media Evolves Focused on how media impacts society and how the needs of society shape how media evolves. A.2 Media Through the Ages Focused on the different ages of media and how they were shaped by the needs of society back then. It also tackles what types of media there were during those times and how they affected the method of communication and information. Prehistoric, ancient, industrial, and new media will be tackled as well. Reference materials: 02 Handout 2 and 02 LCD Slides 1 II. IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE A. This is a Flipped Classroom – All readings and must be done at home and before coming to class. Contact period will focus on application, activities, and synthesis. Some activities will require you to access the Internet outside of class hours. Most of the assessments will be done online. B.
