Standard Descriptive professional statement of desired or agreed level of performance against which the quality of care can be judged. Characteristics of standards: 1. Observable. 2. Achievable. 3. Measurable. Types Of Standards : There are many types but the most popular types classified according to the a frame of reference: Structure. Process. Outcome. Structure Standard The "set-up" of the institution Such as : Physical environment , building , facilities and equipment. Policies , philosophy rules and regulation. Job description and qualifications. Staff number and mix. Process Standard The set of activities that goes on within hospital service and between practionners and patients. Such as : ❑Assessment techniques procedures. ❑Methods of delivering nursing care. ❑Methods of patient education. ❑Methods of documentation. Outcomes Standard Measures changes in the patient health status , this change may be due to nursing care , medical care or as a result of variety of service offered to the patient. Such as : Recovery rate. patient′s satisfaction. mortality rate. Criteria Is a predetermined measurable elements that will indicate if the standard is met and to what extent it is met. Characteristics Of Criteria : Observable. Achievable. Measurable. Types Of Criteria : Structure. process. outcome. Evaluating Performance By tools and methods : 1. Audit ( concurrent and retrospective ). 2. Tools (application tools ). Application Tools : 1-structure monitoring tool ( monitor the structural setup necessary for providing quality patient care ) 2- Process monitoring tool (used to monitor the process of nursing care provided 3- Criteria based evaluation (procedure evaluation ) Is a tool of evaluating the quality of patient of patient care through evaluating each procedure being performed directly / indirectly to the patient.
