Choose your answer from the words in the box. classification enumeration explanation time order 1. Do you know there are millions of different plant species on earth? Have you ever wondered how difficult it would be for a scientist to study each of them? While all plants have similar pots, plants that are essential for its living often look different. These differences are used to group plants into different types. While there are many ways to study plant classification, one way is to group them based on their sizes. We see a lot of plants around us. Some plants are big and strong. Some plants are small and weak. Trees are big plants. They are quite strong. They have many branches and strong woody stems. Shrubs are smaller than trees. They also have many branches and woody stems. Herbs are small plants with soft and green stems. They are smaller than shrubs. Climbers and creepers are also small plants. Stems of these plants are very weak. Climbers stand erect with the help of another plants or objects. Whereas, creepers do not stand erect. Creepers crawl along the ground. 2. Source: https://youtu.be/qdoeE4ZdTiQ 1 2. But I also hoped that Cathy had chosen the province because she thought that was her true home, the place where she really belonged, where it was always warm and you could dance in the rain, pick fruits right off the trees, and sleep outside at night under the stars. Frogs are not the only animals to undergo metamorphosis; most other amphibians also undergo remarkable changes throughout their life cycles, as do many species of invertebrates. During metamorphosis, two hormones, prolactin and thyroxine, control the transformation from egg to larva to adult. Source: www.thoughtco.com>life-cycle-of-a-frog 4. The first thing I do in my day is wake up. Next, I get washed up and dressed. Then I eat breakfast and head to work. After my work day is over, I head home where I do house and yard work. When those chores are done I eat dinner and relax in front of the television. Finally, I head to bed and fall asleep. Source: ROMWhenDidThatHappen.pdf 5. The water cycle is also known as the hydrological cycle. There is the same amount of water on the Earth now as there was when the Earth began. The water cycle is how the earth’s water recycles itself. The cycle includes precipitation, evaporation, condensation, and transpiration. Earth’s water keeps changing from liquid water to vapor and then back again. This cycle happens because of the sun’s heat and gravity. Let Us Study In this lesson, you will learn the different text types according to purpose and feature such as classification, explanation, enumeration, and time order. Are you ready to unlock this lesson? Texts are written for a variety of purposes, using different forms and standards of composition. These forms of writing are known as text types. But how do we distinguish text types? Recognizing Texts that Classify or Describe If you want to categorize things according to their similarities such as the food that we eat or the clothes that we wear, the text type you would need is classification. Read the paragraph. Elephants are mammals that are distinguished by their large or massive size and long trunk which is used for breathing, smelling, touching, feeding, drinking, lifting heavy objects, and trumpeting. They are equally remarkable for their tusks which are extremely long teeth that keep growing during the elephant’s life. Their tusks are made of ivory for which elephants have always been hunted. Adult elephants have little hair on their thick, wrinkled skin; but their tails are tipped with wiry hair, and their eyelashes can be over five (5) inches long. Elephants are great eaters, consuming up to 225 kilos of leaves, bark, fruit, and grasses a day, and up to 40 gallons of water. Elephants have been a great help to people for at least 5,000 years because of their size and strength. Source: Joy in Learning English 5 Text What is the text about? What do you think is the purpose of the writer in writing this text? How is the elephant classified or described in the text? This text is about the elephants. The writer’s purpose is to classify or describe the elephant according to its size which is supported by details. 3 -REMEMBER- Classification means to categorize things according to their similarities. The purpose of classification is to break down subjects into smaller, more specific parts. The example given is a classification of an elephant according to its size. Recognizing Text Types that Explain If you want to describe how or why things happen such as life cycle, the text type you would need is explanation. Read the paragraph. Heat deep in the core of the Earth continually escapes toward the surface. As the heat rises, it warms rock, which begins to rise slowly. This molten rock, or magma, usually cools within. Sometimes, however, magma continues to push upward. It absorbs water in the ground and heats it to produce steam or gas. Gas-filled magma is lighter and can rise through a series of channels toward the surface. When it reaches a vent or opening in the surface, it spews out. Magma that erupts from a vent is called lava, reaching temperatures of more them 1000 degrees centigrade. When cooled, the lava and other materials, such as ash and rocks, build up to form the cone of a volcano. Source: Joy in Learning English 5 Text What does the paragraph explain? What items related to the topic are being described? How does the paragraph end? In what tense are the verbs expressed? Can you visualize the life of a volcano based on the explanation? The paragraph explains about the heat, deep in the core of the earth. The words related to the topic such as molten rock, magma, and gas-filled magma are being described in the paragraph. It ends with a conclusion. Notice that the tenses of the verbs are in present tense. -REMEMBER- A factual text type that explains how or why something happens is an explanation. It begins with the topic, describes items related to the topic in the right order, and explains how these items are related to each other. It may have a conclusion. This text type is written in the present tense. 4 Distinguishing the Enumeration Text Type If you want to list individual parts of a group that could be summed up as a whole, the text type that you would need is enumeration. Read the paragraph. The Hertzsprung-Rusell Diagram shows the three very different types of stars. The first type is called the Main Sequence which includes the sun. These stars are fueled by nuclear fusion, converting hydrogen into helium. The hotter they are, the brighter they become. They last for about five billion years. The second type includes the supergiants. As they reach old age, they deplete their hydrogen supply. Their core contracts as their outer layers expand. Eventually, they will explode becoming nebula or supernova, then white dwarfs, neutron stars, or black holes. Third, smaller stars consequently become white dwarfs, shrinking and depleting their nuclear fuels, finally becoming cold, dark, black dwarfs. Source: Joy in Learning English 5 Text What is the paragraph about? What things are enumerated to show the different types of stars? What words or phrases signal the enumeration or listing? The paragraph enumerates the three different types of stars. Main Sequence, supergiants, and smaller stars are enumerated to show the different types of stars. The signal words used in this paragraph are first, second, and third. -REMEMBER- An enumeration paragraph or text lists the kinds, characters, classes, types, parts, ways, and groups of a thing or subject. Transition/signal words used to show enumeration are the following, in many ways, such as, first or one, second, or next, and so on. These are called enumerations. 5 Distinguishing Time-Order Text Types If you want to understand a sequence of events or procedure, the text type you would need is time-order. How to Purify Cloudy Water Boiling is perhaps the safest way to purify cloudy water. You will need a boiling pot, fire, salt, a coffee filter or cloth, charcoal, and cotton. First, prefilter the cloudy water with a cotton filter or folded cloth. Then, boil the filtered water. Add a small amount of salt to improve the taste of the water as it is boiling. If you are above 2000 feet altitude, boil for three minutes. Next, let the water cool. Meanwhile, make a cotton and charcoal filter by crushing the charcoal and putting it in the cotton as trap. This will remove impurities and still some bad taste from the boiled water. Finally, filter the boiled water through the cotton trap. Source: Joy in Learning English 5 Text What is the text about? What are the steps presented in this process text? What words help you get the process step by step? What do you think will happen when one or two steps are missed? The text is about the steps on how to purify cloudy water. Signal words like first, then, next, meanwhile and finally are used to get the process step by step. Missing one or two steps in the process will spoil the purification of cloudy water. -REMEMBER- Time order words signal the order in which events happen. They allow readers to understand a sequence of events. Transition/signal words that may be used to show order of steps include first, second, third, then, before, after, during, meanwhile, etc. 6 You have just learned about the different text types according to purpose and feature. Now, here’s a brief summary to help you easily distinguish each text-type. Text-type Meaning Purpose Features Signal Words Classification categorizing to inform *begins with a none things general according to classification their or definition similarities *lists a sequence of related information about the topic *ends with a concluding statement Explanation non-fiction to *begins with none text which inform/explain the topic, describes how *describes or why things items related happen to the topic in the right order, and explains how these items are related to each other *may have a conclusion *written in the present tense 7 Text-type Meaning Purpose Features Signal Words Enumeration lists the to clarify a *begins with a *in many kinds, topic general class ways, such as, characters, and breaks it first or one, classes, types, down by second, or parts, ways, listing some or next, and so and groups of all of its parts on a thing or subject Time Order signals the to inform *events may *first, second, order in which about events be organized third, then, events happen or content by time or before, after, date during, meanwhile, etc. Let Us Practice DIRECTIONS: Identify the following text types as classification, explanation, enumeration, or time order. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper. 1. Moist air and heat are necessary for hurricanes to start and to keep on going. As the surface of the ocean heats up, the water goes up into the air. This warm air becomes moist. It starts to form a column. The air around rushes toward the column and forms a spiral around it. The system is called a cyclone. As the column of air becomes warmer, the winds blow faster. If the storm reaches 119 kph, hurricane is born. Hurricanes often cover areas up to 300 kilometers wide. They may last a few hours or for two weeks. They cause heavy rains that swell and overflow rivers. The strong winds produce floods. Source: Joy in Learning English 5 Text 8 2. Although friendship is something that most people enjoy, friendships are not all the same. Some friendships are forged from a long-term familiarity with one another, and other friendships can spring up just by spending one fun evening together. Not all friendships result in daily or even weekly time spent together; long-term friendships can be kept afloat using communication tools like the internet and telephone, while other friendships result in sporadic get-togethers sometimes months or even years apart. People seek different things in friendship, meaning certain friendships result around trips to a diner or video games while other friendships may occur due to a work relationship or general common interests. He would assist his mother in some household chores and some errands. On days when there would be no classes, he would go with his father in the farm and would pasture the carabao to the fields. On weekdays, he would burn the midnight oil working on his assignments and studying his lessons. Source: Joy in Learning English 5 Text 4. Yesterday, I decided to get some fresh air. It had been raining all morning and I was stuck inside with nothing to do. I took my bicycle from the garage. Its sleek collars and racing wheels seemed to be begging for a long ride. After I closed the garage door, I climbed aboard and peddled quickly down the street. Next, I passed my friend’s house. I hadn’t visited with Billy in a few days, but decided to continue on. By the time I stopped at the stoplight to cross the street, I could feel my heart pounding with excitement. I knew the swings would be empty and ready to soar in the air. Finally, I arrived at the park. To my surprise, Billy was already sitting aboard a swing. He had been waiting for my arrival. Source: https://en.calameo.com/read/0004401122dee5af06fc3 9 5. There are lots of reasons why I like my classroom. First, it is really big and roomy. We sit at rectangle tables that are about six feet by two feet. Since there are four of us sitting at the table, we have lots of room. The chairs are comfortable. They are bright orange and have matching cushion seats and backs. The floor has a light green rug, which means we don’t need tennis balls on the chair legs to keep the noise down. The bulletin boards are neat. They run all the way from floor to the ceiling, and our teacher writes on them in bright colors. There is a great reading area in our room. It has a blue couch that my teacher said used to be her apartment. The couch has four comfy pillows, two red, one yellow, and one blue-striped. Next to the couch are lots of books in big, bright-colored baskets, so I never have a problem finding something I like to read. My classroom? It’s the best! Earth’s water is always in movement, and the natural water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle, describes the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. Water is always changing states between liquid, vapor, and ice, with these processes happening in the blink of an eye over millions of years. What does the paragraph explain? _____________________________________. How to make Pastillas de leche Pastillas de leche are sweet and milky candies that are usually served after meal. Make this classic Pinoy dessert recipe in three easy steps! First, combine milk and sugar in a saucepan; bring to a boil and stir constantly until it turns into a paste. Add butter and powdered milk. Mix thoroughly. Next, take the pan off the heat and transfer mixture to a separate bowl. Set aside until pastillas are cool enough to touch but still warm. Divide pastillas into 20 pieces and roll into small cylinders. Finally, roll lightly in sugar. Wrap in paper by placing in the center of a square, rolling it into a cylinder, and tucking the ends into the roll. 10 Source: https://www.yummy.ph/recipe/pastillas-de-leche-recipe-a145-20120626 2. What do you think will happen if one or two steps are missed? ____________________________________________________________________. The Earth’s surface is constantly changing through slow processes that we don’t usually see. One is erosion. This has worn away rocks and mountains over millions of years caused by air, water, and wind. Another change is caused by earthquakes that originate deep inside the planet. More sudden and violent than erosion, an earthquake results when strains between Earth’s plates produce shock waves. And, the third process results when molten rock-forming material called lava, escapes onto the surface through gaps in the crust. What we experience is volcanic eruption. How to Boil Eggs Learn the best method on how to boil eggs to produce the perfect hard-boiled egg every single time without any fuss. First, place eggs in the bottom of a saucepan. Be sure not to crowd the eggs in the pan. They should fit comfortably. Next, Fill the pan with cold water, 1 inch above the eggs. Once the water comes to a boil, cover the pan with a lid and remove the pan from the heat. Do not lift the lid. Set a timer for the type of boiled egg you want, from 4 minutes to 12 minutes. After that, fill a large bowl with ice and water. Then, when the eggs reach the desired cooking time, use tongs to remove the eggs from the hot water and immerse gently into the prepared ice water to cool, about 10 minutes. Finally, gently tap the eggs against a hard surface and peel away the shell. Rinse the egg under cold water to remove any bits of shell and pat dry. Dogs are domesticated animals that have been living with humans for generations. Dogs can be classified in a number of different ways. For example, they can be classified by breed. Examples of different breeds include beagles, basset hounds, poodles and countless others. They can also be classified by their role in the lives of their masters and the work they do. For example, a dog might be a family pet, a working dog, a show dog, or a hunting dog. In many cases, dogs are defined both by their breed and their role. For example, a dog could be a beagle that is a family pet. There are essentially three types of parents. The first type of parent acts like a consultant who provides loving and logical guidance for his/her child. In addition, the consulting parent shares feelings about responsibilities and helps the child explore solutions and learn from them. The second type of parent is called the helicopter because this parent hovers over the child constantly. The helicopter parent tries to protect the child by making all decisions, implying that the child is not capable of handling any responsibility. Moreover, this parent assumes the child always needs rescuing from a hostile world. The last type of parent is the drill sergeant who commands and directs the life of the child. This parent sometimes makes a lot of demands and tells how he/she should handle responsibility. To do this, this parent sometimes makes threats and uses punishment as the teaching method. In conclusion, it seems the best parent is the consultant although most parents probably have characteristics of all three types to a certain degree.
