ENGLISH 6 Lesson 5: Classifying Adverbs according to Meaning S.Y. 2024-2025 LESSON OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, students are expected to attain the following: classify adverbs according to type; analyze sample sentences and classify the adverbs according to type; and practice using different types of adverbs in sentences to modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. LESSON DISCUSSION Read the following sentences. Joseph and Jane play tennis daily. Dad played tennis yesterday. The boys play tennis here. Mom never plays tennis, not even once. My grandfather plays tennis very skillfully. Joseph had an extremely ashen face the first time he played tennis. LESSON DISCUSSION Adverbs modify the meaning of a word in the sentence by describing when, where, how, or in what manner, how often, and the intensity and degree of the action was done. LESSON DISCUSSION Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and another adverbs. LESSON DISCUSSION 1. Adverbs of time tell us when someone does something or when something happens. Examples: Today tomorrow next week tonight Next year in 2006 on Monday in October Later now soon last month This morning already last night LESSON DISCUSSION 2. Adverbs of place tell us where things happen or where someone or something is going. Examples: up down outside inside there in upstairs over under near here below away beside top everywhere somewhere LESSON DISCUSSION 3. Adverbs of manner answer the question how or in what manner. Examples: Well hard diligently smoothly slowly Fast right carefully neatly efficiently Adverbs of manner are formed by adding the suffix –ly to adjective except irregular adjectives. LESSON DISCUSSION 4. Adverbs of degree tell about the intensity or degree of an action, and adjective, or another adverb. They are also known as adverbs of intensity. Examples: very entirely greatly equally deeply almost nearly quite too enough hardly scarcely fully really totally fairly strongly purely nearly terribly absolutely extremely LESSON DISCUSSION 5. Adverbs of affirmation or negation affirms or denies. Examples: yes surely naturally definitely no not never certainly LESSON DISCUSSION 6. Adverbs of frequency tell you how often someone does something or how often something happens. Examples: always often frequently usually normally sometimes occasionally regularly seldom ever never hourly daily weekly every week fortnight monthly annually twice ACTIVITY Directions: Pick out the adverb in each sentence and write each one under the correct column in the table that follows. 1. The sudden demise of Uncle Joseph broke everyone’s hearts. 2. The entire clan was so deeply affected by his death that nobody wanted to think about the forthcoming reunion of the Escamillas family held annually. 3. His family wanted to move away for the time being, so they could think about their plans later. 4. The priest arrived yesterday and talked patiently with the family for them to live peacefully. 5. It is incredibly hard for the family to accept his death, but they know they will make him happy if they let him go.
