ENGLISH 9 NEWSPAPER TELEVISION RADIO TELEVISION LESSON 3 Journalistic and Literary Writing PAGE 37 & 56 Journalistic Writing JOURNALISTIC WRITING - is the writing style used in reporting news stories in newspapers, television broadcasts, on radio, and on the Internet. JOURNALISTIC WRITING - Journalism helps to explain the events that impact our lives and is developed in a number of forms and styles. JOURNALISTIC WRITING - Each journalistic form and style uses different techniques and writes for different purposes and audiences. JOURNALISTIC WRITING - There are five principal types of journalism: investigative, news, reviews, columns, and feature writing. 5 TYPES OF JOURNALISM 1. Investigative journalism - aims to uncover the truth about a particular subject, person, or event. 5 TYPES OF JOURNALISM 2. News journalism - is straightforward. Facts are relayed without flourishes or interpretation. A typical news story often constitutes a headline with just enough explanation to orient the reader. 5 TYPES OF JOURNALISM They relay facts, events, and information to society in a straightforward, accurate, and unbiased manner. 5 TYPES OF JOURNALISM 3. Reviews - are partly opinion and partly fact-based. The review needs to accomplish two things: one, accurately describe the subject being reviewed, and two, provide an intelligent opinion of the subject, based on research and experience. 5 TYPES OF JOURNALISM 4. Columns - are based primarily on the personality of the author, allowing him or her to write about subjects in a personal style. Column writers can take a humorous approach or specialize in a particular subject area or topic. 5 TYPES OF JOURNALISM 5. Feature writing - provides scope, depth, and interpretation of trends, events, topics or people. 5 TYPES OF JOURNALISM - To offer a previously unseen perspective on an event, issue, or person. Features usually have the highest word count of all journalism types. FEATURES OF JOURNALISTIC WRITING FEATURES OF JOURNALISTIC WRITING 1. LITERARY WRITING - is a style of writing that is used in creative and literary work; this is the style of writing that is used in fiction. LITERARY WRITING - The language used in literary writing is creative, imaginative, and uses literary techniques like hyperbole, personification, similes, metaphors, etc. FEATURES OF LITERARY WRITING 1. The focus of literary writing is on the conscious, deliberate use and arrangement of words. FEATURES OF LITERARY WRITING 2. The purpose is to entertain and to give aesthetic pleasure. FEATURES OF LITERARY WRITING 3. Usually in first-person (I, me, my) or third-person (she, he, her, him). FEATURES OF LITERARY WRITING 4. Style is informal, colloquial, or vulgar. FEATURES OF LITERARY WRITING 5. Uses figurative language. Simile – She is pretty like pink roses. Symbolism – colors, elements FEATURES OF LITERARY WRITING 6. Usually fictional and sometimes display a sense of reality. Fiction - refers to plot, settings, and characters created from the imagination. Non-fiction - refers to factual stories focused on FEATURES OF LITERARY WRITING 7. Can be found in combination with expressive or persuasive purpose. Kinds of Literary Writing KINDS OF LITERARY WRITING 1. Novel - is a piece of long narrative in literary prose. Narrative prose is meant to entertain and tell a story. KINDS OF LITERARY WRITING Example of Novel: -“To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee - “Beloved” by Toni Morrison KINDS OF LITERARY WRITING 2. Short story - is a work of prose fiction that can be read in one sitting-usually between 20 minutes to an hour. KINDS OF LITERARY WRITING Example of Short Story: - “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson - “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe KINDS OF LITERARY WRITING 3. Poem - is a piece of writing in which the words are chosen for their beauty and sound and are carefully arranged, often in short lines which rhyme. KINDS OF LITERARY WRITING Example of Poems: - “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost - “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou - “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe KINDS OF LITERARY WRITING KINDS OF LITERARY WRITING 4. Song - is a short piece of music, usually with words. It combines melody and vocals. KINDS OF LITERARY WRITING Genres of Song: -Pop music - Country - Rock -Alternative/Indie KINDS OF LITERARY WRITING 5. Play - is a form of drama that primarily consists of dialogue between characters and is intended for theatrical performance rather than mere reading. KINDS OF LITERARY WRITING Examples of Play: - Hamlet - Macbeth - “A Midsummer Night's Dream” by William Shakespeare KINDS OF LITERARY WRITING 6. Musical - a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance. Movies - is a series of moving images shown on a screen, usually with sound, that make up a story.
