The majority of propagandists were young men, frequently of mestizo and Creole descent whose families could afford to send them to study in Madrid and Barcelona's Spanish universities. He was born In Calamba, Laguna, on June 19, 1861. He attended the Universities of Heidelberg, Leipzig, Berlin, UST, Universidad Central de Madrid, and Ateneo. The National Hero of the Philippines, writer of several essays, the novels Noli Me Tángere and El Filibusterismo, and who was later put to death by firing squad by the Spanish colonial authorities. He founded Liga Filipina. a modest, reform- minded community that shunned independence and remained to have an alliance to Spain. 16 2 MARCELO H. DEL PILAR The Consummate Journalist / Propagandist) 17 Marcelo H. del Pilar was born in Kupang, San Nicolas, Bulacan, on August 30 1850. He became an eminent propagandist as a young man, using his writing to advocate for the independence of the Philippines. He was appointed editor of Diariong Tagalog, a newspaper that harshly denounced the policies and treatment of the Spanish government and populace, in 1882. He wrote satires against the Spanish friars under the pen name Plaridel, including "Dasalan at Tuksuhan" and "Kaiingat Kayo." (Marcelo H. Del Pilar – Provincial Government of Bulacan, n.d.) 18 3 GRACIANO LOPEZ JAENA The Greatest Orator 19 Born in Jaro, Iloilo, on December 18, 1856, Graciano Lopez Jaena became a cornerstone of the Reform Movement during the Spanish occupation. In 1888, he was among the founding members and editors of La Solidaridad, the Filipinos' representative in Spain. Lopez Jaena did not get paid for his work as an editor. Free housing, food, clothes, and a small amount of pocket money for small expenses were his only benefits. Under several aliases, including Naning, Kalipulako, and Tigbalang, he wrote frequently on history, politics, sociology, and travel for La Solidaridad while serving as managing editor. Newspapers and Magazines: La Solidaridad, founded by Graciano López Jaena, served as the movement's main publication, advocating for reforms. Essays and Pamphlets: These were used to disseminate ideas about equality and reform among the Filipino populace. 26 IV SIGNIFICANT PIECE One of the most influential piece during the Propoganda Movement is José Rizal’s Novel ,Noli Me Tangere (1887), which critiques Spanish colonialism and social injustices in the Philippines.
