Professional behavior and fitness of practice for medical students Dr. weam aribi Pediatric specialist Skill lab instructor International Maarf University Duty of doctors Doctors are obliged to follow the sets of standards of medical care ( good medical practice). Medical students expected to display standards of professional behavior that are different from those expected from of other students in other professions. Duties of doctors registered to practice Patients must be able to trust doctors with their lives and health. You should show respect to human lives and values. Your practice must meet the standards expected from all doctors. Key duties of doctors Knowledge ,skills and performance. Safety and quality. Communication ,partnership and teamwork. Maintaining trust. Knowledge ,skills and performance Make the care of your patients, your first concern. Provide a good standard of patient care : Keep your professional knowledge and skills to date. Recognize and work within the limits of your competence. Safety and quality Take rapid action if you think that patient safety ,dignity or comfort is being compromised. Protect and promote (elevate) the health of patients and the public. Communication partnership and teamwork Treat patients as individuals and respect their dignity. Treat patients politely and greatly. Respect the right of patients to confidentiality. Work in partnership with patients Listen to , respond to their concerns and preferences. Give patients the information they need in a way they can understand. Respect patients right to make decisions with you about their treatment and care. Support patients in caring for themselves to improve and maintain their health. Work with colleague in the way that best save patients interests. Maintain trust Be honest and open and act with integrity. Never discriminate unfairly against patients or colleagues. Never abuse your patients trust in you or the public. How to develop professionalism Develop healthy ways to cope with stress and challenges (resilience ). Deal with doubt and uncertainty. Apply ethical and moral reasoning to your work. Manage your time effectively. Work effectively in a team including being able to give constructive and honest feedback. How to develop professionalism Maintain your own learning and self development. Be responsive to feedback. Deal with and mitigate against personal bias. Get feedback and assistance. How to be professional in clinical replacements Always introduce yourself to patients , letting them know your name and that you are a medical student. Check that the patient is not objecting to the presence of students. Make sure that you dress smartly , your ID badage should be visbile at all times. Arrive on time for your replacements and do not leave early. Be honest with patients if he do not know the answer to your question. Record your work clearly and legibly Record clearly and legibly. relevant clinical findings Decision made and actions agreed. Any investigations ,treatment or drugs prescribed. The information given to the patient. Put your name , year of study and date Get rid of the notes carefully Do not store confidential material in places that are not secure , this include digital and paper files. Your relation to social media Do not share or post information about patients that could identify a patient. Do not post complaints about individuals at your medical school or clinical placement. Remember social media sites cannot guarantee confidentiality what ever privacy setting you use. Information once published on social media sites ,you may not be able to control how it is used by others, and it may be difficult or impossible to remove it. Show respect to patients Treat patients and colleagues fairly and without discrimination. Identify and handle and control your unconscious bias. Be honest and trustworthy in all your communications with patients and colleagues. Be open and truthfull about your health. Behavior outside of medical school Avoid any actions that undermine the confidence patients have in doctors or medical profession. Do not make discriminatory comments about individuals or groups. Un professional behavior if outside the medical school will invite action from your medical school. Key areas of concern in professionalism Poor time management. Non attendance. Cheating. Poor communication skills. Passing off the work of others as their own. Signing into taught sessions from which they are absent. Key areas of concern Being disruptive in teaching sessions or training environment. Challenging behavior towards teachers or not accepting criticism. Failure to answer or respond to communication. Unwillingness to learn from constructive feedback from others. Assault physical violence. Key areas of concern Misuse of social media , online bullying. Break of confidentiality. Failure to obtain proper consent from patients Unlawful discrimination. Sexual , racial ,bullying or other forms of harassment. Failure to keep appropriate boundaries in behavior. Impaired fitness to practice in medical students Misconduct, which related to : Honesty. Trust. Character. Deficient professional performance. Unsatisfactory academic performance and progression which can be dealt with. Impaired fitness to practice Cautions and convictions. adverse physical or mental health. Failure to be immunized against common serious communicable diseases. Key areas of concern Misconduct and health conditions relating to drug or alcohol use. Driving under the effect of alcohol or drugs. Misuse of prescription medications. Alcohol consumption that affects clinical work , the work environment , performance in the educational environment. Drug use , dealing , possessing or supplying drugs.
