Identify various birth control methods. Evaluate effectiveness of contraceptive method and its possible risks Explain natural family planning methods. Promote awareness of contraceptive options. WHAT IS PREGNANCY? PREGNANCY Process and series of changes that take place in a woman's organs and tissues as a result of a developing fetus. The entire process from fertilization to birth takes an average of **266--270 days**, or about **nine months**. HOW DOES PREGNANCY HAPPEN? JOURNEY TO PREGNANCY 1.Menstrual Cycle 2.Ovulation 3.Fertilization 4.Implantation BIRTH CONTROL **Birth contro**l is any medicine, device or method people use to prevent pregnancy. Types of birth control can include pills, intrauterine devices (IUD), vasectomy and condoms. BARRIER METHODS![](media/image9.png) Male Condoms Female Condoms Spermicide Diaphragm Sponge BARRIER METHODS **Male Condoms**: is a thin covering made of latex, plastic or lambskin that is rolled over an erect penis. The covering prevents semen, the fluid that contains sperm, from entering your vagina. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Condoms can break, tear or slip off, exposing you to another person\'s bodily fluids. BARRIER METHODS **Female Condoms**: female condom is a lubricated plastic tube that has a flexible ring at each end. One end of the tube is closed. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Slippage or Displacement: The condom can slip out of place during intercourse. Ripping or Tearing: It may tear, leading to reduced effectiveness. Irritation or Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may experience irritation from the material. BARRIER METHOD **Spermicide**: Spermicide is a gel, cream or suppository that prevents sperm from reaching an egg. It contains **nonoxynol-9 (N-9)** that damage sperm, so they can't swim up to an egg. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? May irritate sensitive genital tissues Increase your risk for HIV and other STDs No protection from HIV and other STIs and STDs BARRIER METHODS **Diaphragms**: Shallow, dome shaped cups made of latex or silicone, inserted into the vagina before intercourse to cover the cervix and block sperm. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Using a diaphragm and spermicide doesn't protect against some STIs, including HIV (the virus that causes AIDS). BARRIER METHODS **Sponge**: vaginal sponge is a small, donut-shaped device that contains spermicide. It acts as a barrier between sperm and your cervix. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? The sponge is associated with higher rates of vaginal infections and doesn't protect against STIs. HORMONAL METHODS Birth Control Pills Injection NON HORMONAL METHODS Copper IUD (Intrauterine Device) HORMONAL METHOD **Birth Control Pills**: Oral contraceptives estrogen containing birth control pills, the contraceptive vaginal ring and patch, a hormones that prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and thin the uterine lining. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Breast tenderness/pain. Nausea. Headaches. Irregular periods. HORMONAL METHOD **Injection**: A hormonal shot (such as Depo-Provera) that prevents ovulation for about three months. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Depo-Provera® may cause irregular bleeding and may cause weight gain. May increase the risk of weak, porous bones (osteoporosis) that could increase the risk of broken bones. NON- HORMONAL METHOD **Copper IUD (Intrauterine Device)**: A small T-shaped device inserted into the uterus that prevents fertilization and may prevent implantation of a fertilized egg. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Infections Ectopic pregnancy May increase bleeding and cramping EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTIVE METHOD It is a form of birth control that you can use within 120 hours (five days) of having unprotected sex. It\'s most effective in preventing pregnancy if you use it within three days of unprotected intercourse. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Can cause heavy bleeding or spotting. Feel light-headed or dizzy. Experience cramps or backaches. STERILIZATION METHOD Tubal ligation (females) Vasectomy (males) STERILIZATION METHOD **Tubal ligation** (females): In this procedure---also known as "having your tubes tied"---the fallopian tubes are cut, sealed, clipped, or tied, so the egg and sperm can't meet in the fallopian tube. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Higher risk for an estopic pregnancy Improper would healing or infections. STERILIZATION METHOD **Vasectomy (males)**: This procedure involves cutting, tying, or blocking the vas deferens---two tubes that carry sperm to the penis. WHAT IS THE RISK? Bruising of your scrotum Infection of the surgery site Mild pain or discomfort Swelling FAMILY PLANNING NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING also called as **"fertility awareness"** it is based on the body's ovulation cycle a form of birth control that doesn't involve medication or devices FERTILITY AWARENESS METHODS FERTILITY AWARENESS METHODS: **Rhythm Method (Calendar method )** It teaches females to recognize when will they ovulate. This allows them to determine their fertile days. Thus, avoiding sexual intercourse during these days. ADVANTAGE This method is inexpensive and has no side effects. DISADVANTAGE One of the least effective forms of birth control. Only effective about 75% to 88% of the time. FERTILITY AWARENESS METHODS: **Cervical Mucus Method** ![](media/image13.png) Involves analyzing the vaginal discharge ( mucus ) to identify when is the females fertile and infertile phases. PHASES OF CERVICAL MUCUS 1\. **Menstrual Phase** - Cervical mucus is not observable. 2. **Dry Days** - Little to no mucus is present. 3\. **Increasing Mucus** - Cervical mucus becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy. 4\. **Ovulation** - The day of the most fertile cervical mucus coincides with ovulation. 5\. **Post Ovulation** - Mucus becomes thicker, cloudy, and sticky. ADVANTAGE This method has no side effects, inexpensive, and it improves the individuals body awareness. DISADVANTAGE 88% effective. In most cases, it's about 75% effective. FERTILITY AWARENESS METHODS **Basal Body Temperature Method** A way of identifying ovulation. One must have a thermometer that measures temperatures to at least one-tenth of a degree for it to work. It involves tracking a woman's body temperature each morning before engaging in any physical activity. FIRST HALF OF MENSTRUAL CYCLE Known as the follicular phase. ( **Estrogen** dominates ) BBT remains relatively low --- around 97°F to 97.5°F or 36.1°Cto 36.4°C). AFTER OVULATION **Progesterone** rises, causing a slight increase in BBT. About 0.5°F to 1°F or 0.3°C to 0.6°C. ADVANTAGE This method can be combined with other methods like cervical mucus method, it is also inexpensive and has no side effects. DISADVANTAGE Not effective when used alone because it only tells a woman that ovulation has occurred. Since you can get pregnant up to five days before ovulation. FERTILITY AWARENESS METHODS **Withdrawal Method** When a person's penis "pulls out" of a person's vagina before [ejaculation] (or cumming). ABSTINENCE Abstinence is the only birth control that is 100% effective. It means you never have sexual intercourse. It\'s also the only way to protect yourself from STDs. GENERAL TIPS **Education**: Always educate yourself on the specific method you choose. **Communication**: Discuss options and preferences with your partner. **Consult Healthcare Providers**: Regular check-ups and guidance can enhance effectiveness and address concerns. REMEMBER Don\'t let someone pressure you into having sex if you don\'t feel ready. It\'s an important decision with serious emotional and physical consequences. THANK YOU!
