Goods and Services Success Criteria I will be successful when I can: Explain the basic activities of marketing in simpler language. Track a product from its extraction as a raw material to its sale as a finished good. Critique a company’s website based on its effectiveness as a marketing How It’s Made Hot Dogs Raw Materials Raw materials are the basic, unprocessed resources used to produce goods Raw materials are usually extracted from nature or harvested Come from mining companies, farms, fishing boats, oil rigs, loggers, etc. Raw Materials Examples of raw materials: Lumber from trees Crude oil Cotton from plants A farmer markets tomatoes to a ketchup maker, or a forestry company markets logs to a paper mill Raw Materials Canada exports a lot of raw materials Why do you think this is so? Raw materials are usually marketed to businesses Raw Materials We also import many raw materials (ex: oranges) But the supply chain of many necessary raw materials is often not in a country’s control The Critical Minerals Suppl y Chain Raw Materials Explain how raw materials are essential for production. Discuss the industries that rely heavily on raw materials. Processed Goods Processed goods are raw materials that have been transformed through manufacturing processes into a form that is more useful to consumers The nature of the product is changed Pasteurizing milk Pressing apples into juice Creating pulp from wood Making steel from iron ore Processed Goods Processed goods may be sold as finished goods, or as semi-finished goods Semi-finished goods are marketed and sold to manufacturers Processed Goods Explain the difference between raw materials and processed goods. Discuss how processing adds value and can increase marketability. Finished Goods Finished goods are products that have completed the manufacturing process and are ready for sale to consumers Do not require any further processing May be a consumer good (ie Nike Shoes) or an industrial good (car seat) Finished Goods Consumer goods are used by the general public ○ Typically sold by retailers to consumers ○ Can be sold to industry Ex: Original Maple Bat Company sells to major league baseball teams as well as consumers Industrial goods are used by a business to make other products, and can be raw materials, processed goods, or finished goods Consumer Goods and Industrial Goods Finished Goods Discuss the importance of branding and packaging in marketing finished goods.
