**PHYSICAL FITNESS** **PHYSICAL EDUCATION** - is a process of teaching motor skills and concomitant knowledge and attitudes to enable individuals to participate pleasurable at the very least, in exercise, game, dance, sports, and recreational activities. **Body** - is like a machine; it functions optimally with regular and proper use and deteriorates with misuse and disuse. To use the body is to move the body. ***Physical Education*** focuses on activities that will make the mind want the body to move, and in so doing enhance the mind and lift the spirit. Physical Education (PE) develops students' competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives, both in and out of school. Physical Educations\' ***goals*** are 1. 2. a. b. c. d. e. 3. 4. These goals can be achieved only if individuals actively participate in exercise, play, games, sports, dance, and recreational activities. **PHYSICAL FITNESS** *Old Concept/Definition* \- The ability to carry out daily tasks with vigor and alertness, without fatigue and with ample energy to enjoy leisure time pursuits and to meet unforeseen emergencies. \- The ability to last, to bear, to withstand stress and to persevere under difficult circumstances where an unfit person would give up. Physical fitness is the opposite of being fatigued from ordinary efforts to lacking energy to enter zestfully into life\'s activities and to become exhausted from unexpected, demanding physical exertion in a positive quality, extending on a scale from death to abundant life. *New Concept/Definition* \- Physical fitness is a dynamic state of energy and vitality that enables one to carry out daily tasks, active leisure time pursuits and meet unforeseen emergencies without undue fatigue, but also helps to avoid hypo kinetic diseases, while functioning at the peak of intellectual capacity. **THE TEN COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS** **Health-related Components** 1. \- The ability of the body\'s system to gather, process and deliver oxygen. Cardiovascular endurance determines the efficiency with which your body delivers oxygen to different parts, especially to the muscles that are being used. 2. \- The ability of the body\'s system to process, deliver, store, and utilize energy. Muscular endurance refers to how good your body is at breaking down stored energy like Fat or Glycogen. These act as fuel which is required by the muscles to execute any exercise or physical activity. 3. \- The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force in a single contraction. Muscular strength is one of the most popular components of fitness. Muscles can be strengthened by focusing on lifting more weights and fewer repetitions. **Skill-related Components** 4. \- If strength is the maximum force that can be produced by the muscles, then power is the speed at which this force can be applied. Power is the key component for explosive exercises such as the start of a sprint, jumping or clean, jerk, and snatch. 5. \- The ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another. Good agility also requires you to be good at other components of fitness as well, such as flexibility, balance, coordination, and speed. 6. \- Speed can be thought of as the rate of which an object covers distance. A fast-moving object has a high speed and covers a relatively large distance in a short amount of time. 7. \- The ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint. Among the 10 components of fitness, flexibility is a very essential one. It is needed not just to enhance performance, but also to reduce the risk of injury, and flexibility isn\'t just about the range of motion on a given joint. 8. \- The ability to control placement of bodies\' center of gravity in relation to its support base. Good balance is key to not just excel in sports activities, but also to practice the various exercise movements correctly. Since it requires you to have precise control over the body\'s position and movement, good balance requires good core strength as well. 9. \- The ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another. Good coordination is about being able to smoothly execute such activities by combining multiple movement patterns into a single fluid movement. 10. \- The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity. Accuracy is critical and essential in order to be good at any sport such as football, baseball, archery, etc. Good accuracy is the ability to precisely control movement in a given direction and at a given intensity. Ultimate goal of Physical Education: **HEALTH AND WELLNESS** **Health** is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. A resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities. **THE SIX COMPONENTS OF HEALTH** 1. \- Being in touch with your emotional presence and being aware and comfortable with your own thoughts and feelings. Emotional wellness relies on being able to express one\'s thoughts and sensations and to be able to absorb those of others. 2. \- Being able to engage in lively interaction with the world around you. The intellect is about flexing the mind\'s muscle and opening the mind. One\'s intellectual being is about continued learning, problem solving, processing, and creativity. Intellectual wellness involves connecting with others on a cerebral level. 3. \- Surround yourself with a healthy work and living environment free of hazards and focused on conservation of all natural resources and the role we play in bettering the environment. Environmental wellness is about respecting nature and your surroundings and in gaining personal fulfillment from our surroundings. 4. \- Maintaining a sound substantial body through regular exercise, proper nutrition, sleeping well and avoiding harmful habits. Maintaining a consistent well-rounded exercise program is crucial to physical wellness. 5. \- Social wellness is about relating, interacting, and communicating well with others. Social wellness is also about being comfortable in your own skin to be able to contribute and engage in a healthy living environment. Including people in all aspects of our lives is tantamount to social wellness. 6. \- Having a sense that life is meaningful and has a purpose and that we are guided in our journey. Spiritual wellness is about embracing the meta-physics and reaching beyond the physical real of existence and experiences. 7. **HOLISTIC HEALTH** is about caring for the whole person - providing for your physical, mental, spiritual, and social needs. It\'s rooted in the understanding that all these aspects affect your overall health, and being unwell in one aspect affects you in others.
