Philippine Folk Dance (Traditional and Ethnic Dance) Objectives: At the end of the lesson, learners will able to: describes the nature of Philippine Folk dances appreciates the Traditional Dances and Ethnic Dances in the Philippines; perform the basic Fundamental FOLK DANCE  Folk dance are the indigenous dances of any specific “folk” or the common people. They are traditional, customary, or recreation dance forms of a given country which have evolved naturally and were handed down the overt expression of emotions and ideas which were peculiarly significant or the re-enactment of customs and events constituting an important part of their history and patterns of daily -living” Duggan, Schlottman, and Rutledge (1948)  Lopez (2006) defined Philippine folk dance as “a traditional mode of expression that employs bodily movements of redundant patterns linked to definitive features of rhythmic beats or music”. She further stated that Philippine folk dance, to be called such, should have the following characteristics: It is traditional. It is expressive behavior. Simple, basic rhythm dominates it and establishes the pattern of movement. It is created by an unknown choreographer or by communal efforts. It performs a function in the life of the (folk) people. FOLK NATIONAL ETHNIC A folk dances are traditional dances found in a certain country. National Dances are also traditional dance but internationally known and perform. Ethnic dance represents history, culture and tradition of the people in the ethnic group. Example of National Folk Dance Cariñosa  Panay Island in the Visayan Island  Is a Philippine dance Hispanic origin from the Maria Clara suite of Philippine folk dances, where the fan and handkerchief plays an instrumental role as it Kuratsa Eastern Visayan region in the Philippines (Waray people). Kuratsa must be done the amenudo-way; that is, only couple dances it a time. The word “binasuan” means “with the use of drinking glasses.” OCCUPATIONAL DANCES- dances that exhibit work and occupation of the dancers. o Mananagat is occupational dance which originated from Bogo, Cebu. This dance imitates the work of a fisherman and his companions. Maria Neis, a native of Bogo taught the dance to her friends in Flihan, a FESTIVAL DANCES- dances that are either religious or secular and are connected with the celebration of recurring events of special significance. GAME DANCES- derivations from local folk games. On example of these is the Pukol dance from Aklan, Capiz, Panay regions. JOKE AND TRICKSTER DANCES- include jokes or tricks played by a dancer on another or a group of dancers who is one of them. Ex. Pandanggo sa Sambalilo MIMETIC OR DRAMA DANCES- dances that mimic animals, inanimate objects, or other people. Ex. Itik-Itik WAR DANCES- dances that express feud and enmity wherein two male dancers engage in physical combat with spartan-like intensity (Lopez, 2006). Ex. Maglalatik SOCIAL AMNETIES DANCES- dances that express social graces, hospitality, and offerings of gifts to friends. All social ballroom dances and most of the “Filipinized” Western dances that show camaraderie merriment belong to this group (Lopez, 2006). Ex. Fundamental Positions of Feet and Arms First Position ARMS Encircle both arms in front of chest with the finger tips about an inch part. 2nd Position ARMS Both arms raised sideward with a graceful curve. 3rd Position ARMS One arm raised sideward, the other arm overhead. 4th Position ARMS One arm in a half circle in front, another arm raised overhead. 5th Position ARMS Both hands raised overhead. 1st Position FEET Heels together, toes apart with an angle of 45 degrees. 2nd Position FEET Astride sideward of about a pace or 1 foot distance. 3rd Position FEET Heels of one foot close to the in-step of the other foot. 4th Position FEET One foot in front of the other about a pace distance 5th Position FEET Heel of front close to the big toes of the near foot.
