Summary

This presentation provides a structured approach to understanding pathophysiological processes throughout the lifespan. It covers aetiology, pathogenesis, and functional changes. The presentation emphasizes a template approach to understanding disease for nursing students. It also discusses diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies.

Pathophysiological processes through the Lifespan The pathophysiological process – a template approach Definition: (succinct: define process and consequences) Aetiology: (cause(s) if known. Any theories if not) Pathogenesis: the mechanism of disease development Stimulus – Is the cause known?  what is the process leading to structural changes  therefore to the functional changes  clinical features (S&S)? Course of disease: (with or without treatment)  Complications Prognosis: (with or without treatment) 7 A template approach (cont) Diagnosis: (methods used to confirm cause or extent of the structural and functional effects) Treatment (including rationales behind therapeutic and nursing interventions) Prevention: (possible if the cause is known) 8 Relevance of the pathophysiological process to the nurse? 9 Pathophysiology and nursing: how does this relate to you? Definition:  provides a concise, succinct overview necessary for client explanation (child to adult).  provides a cue to reflect on any background knowledge needed (A&P, psychological, social, etc) Aetiology:  may be pertinent to prevention, intervention and client education (including current research) 10 Pathophysiology and nursing Pathogenesis:  increasingly important for preventing, reversing, alleviating, monitoring, explaining the clinical manifestations and interventions. Structural (morphological) changes:  necessary to understand, and to be able to predict the functional changes  to explain to the client the importance and consequences of diagnostic procedures 11 Pathophysiology and nursing Functional consequences:  to explain the clinical features  To explain the functional diagnostic tests and interventions to the client and family  to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care Clinical features (signs and symptoms):  What are they? Patient education 12 Pathophysiology and nursing Course of the disease:  planning care, client education  Complications Prognosis:  planning, education  empathy: an awareness of the psychological, social, economic, cultural and lifestyle implications and therefore appropriate interventions 13
