Dr.Aeshah Hassan Abduljabbar Outline • Introduction • History and advancment of the CSSD • The Role of central sterile supply officers in preventing Infection • Why Infection is a concern in CSSD? • Nosocomial infection Introduction • Infection prevention is an evidence-based practice that prevents and controls the spread of microorganisms in healthcare and the community settings. • The aim is to prevent healthcare workers and patients from catching avoidable infection. • The central sterile supply officers serve a significant role in preventing surgical site infection and healthcare-associated infection. • Understanding the importance of the CSSD officer’s role will impact surgery success rate, the length of hospital stay, or hospital readmission due to infection that may lead to death. This establishment was well-defined by the Nuffield Provincial Hospital Trust in the United Kingdom. 1982 American college of surgeon 1955 Cambridge Military Hospital Belfast Nuffield provincial Hospital Trust (UK) CSSD was established in every hospital • •The development of the Central Sterile Supply was based on the needs of the hospitals for aseptic technique and properly Reprocessed Medical Devices during medical procedures. • • •Although some items are sterile from the source and labeled single-use, most reusable medical devices must be thoroughly reprocessed as per the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) and the Infection Prevention and Control standards. Process instruments and equipment following the AMMI standers to make them safe for handling and prepare them for a biocidal process. The Role of central sterile supply officers in preventing Infection • 2. Ensuring that sterile supplies maintain sterility and record event related sterility. The Role of central sterile supply officers in preventing Infection • 3. Inspect surgical instruments to ensure safety usage and functionality. The Role of central sterile supply officers in preventing Infection • 4. Keeping detailed records of number of sterilized items, including Autoclave cycle numbers, lot/batch numbers, expiration dates for future tracking of items that has been sterilized, and stored Why Infection is a concern in CSSD? • In 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that approximately one of every 25hospitalization patient, or 722,000 contracted a Hospital Acquired Infection (HAI). Of those approximate of 25,000 patients died during their hospital stay. • Most of theses infection may have been preventable. The CDC plans to decrease 17 percent in select surgical site infections (SSI). Why Infection is a concern in CSSD? • A surgical Site Infection (SSI) is an infection that occurs postoperatively on the surgical wound where they operation was done. According to the CDC three out of 100 surgeries will develop these infections yearly. Nosocomial infection (HAI) Patients who become infected by microbes while in hospital are said to have a healthcare-acquired infection (HAI). Staff working in the healthcare environment are also at risk from infection, however, they are healthy, they may be vaccinated against a number of diseases, they wear PPE and they are trained to use Standard Precautions. This protects them and also helps prevent them from being a reservoir of infection or a means of transmission. Nosocomial infection (HAI)
