IMPORTANCE OF CHEMISTRY TO DAILY LIFE Mr. Dexter Kian A. Banca OBJECTIVES At the end of this class, you should be able to; Relate the importance of chemistry to daily life Describe the role of chemistry to society and technology Cite contribution of chemistry to other sciences like geology, agriculture, medicine, nutrition, etc. Enumerate the different task of a chemistry Give examples of careers that use chemistry What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of matter, its properties, how and why substances combine or separate to form other substances. Here’s a look at the importance of chemistry and why you should study it. What is Chemistry? Chemistry has a reputation for being a complicated and boring science, but for the most part, that reputation is undeserved. Fireworks and explosions are based on chemistry, so it’s definitely not a boring science. What is Chemistry? If you take classes in chemistry, you’ll apply math and logic, which can make studying chemistry a challenge if you are weak in those areas. However, anyone can understand the basic of how things work… and that’s the study of chemistry. In a nutshell, the important of chemistry is that it explains the world around you. What is Chemistry? Chemistry Explains… Chemistry Explains… CHEMICAL REACTIONS HAPPEN WHEN  a car is started  tarnish is removed from silver  fertilizer is added to help plants grow  food is digested  electricity is produced from burning natural gas  rust is formed on iron nails Chemistry Explains… EVERYTHING IN OUR LIVES FROM MATERIALS TO LIFE INVOLVE CHEMISTRY  glass (SiO2)n  metal alloys  chemically treated water  plastics and polymers  baking soda, NaHCO3  foods  fertilizers and pesticides  living beings Chemistry Explains… CHEMICALS IN TOOTHPASTE Chemistry Explains… Food Preservatives Food preservatives prevent spoilage of food due to microbial growth. The most commonly, used preservatives include table salt, sugar, vegetable oils and sodium benzoate, C6H5COONa. Sodium benzoate is used in limited quantities and is metabolized in the body. Salts of sorbic acid and propanoic acid are also used as preservatives. Chemistry Explains… About chemistry in cosmetics Cosmetics are substances used to enhance the appearance or odor of the human body. A subset of cosmetics is called "make-up“, which refers to products intended to change the user‟s appearance. There are still health concerns regarding the presence of harmful chemicals within these products. Lipsticks and lip balm contain oils, beeswax and perfumes. These protect, soften and brighten the lips. Nail polish is made of lacquer, and consists of polymers, solvents, plasticizer's, colourants and perfumes. Mascaras have a composition based on a volatile solvent, beeswax, pigments (iron oxide) and filmfying polymers Chemistry Explains… Industries and Transport From cloth mills, lather factories, petro-chemical industries and refineries to metal industries- all use numerous fuels for power generation and chemical products for processing their product and improve the equality and simultaneously produce pollution. Now-a-days chemical effluent treatment plants use chemicals to control or neutralist he hazardous impact of pollutants produced by the industries. Aviation and shipping industries generate power through power plants which burn fuels. Petrol and diesel emit out green house gases dangerous for the survival on earth which damage the ozone layer that protects us from UV rays. As a result global warming has taken place which is a destroyer of the planet earth. But again Chemistry paves the way with bio-fuels. Chemistry Explains… Science and Technology The destructive effects of Atom Bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Generations in Japan have suffered the devastation and there has-been no solace. The threat of weapons of mass- destruction (WMDs) like the Nuclear, Chemical and Biological weapons looms large on the Humanity. Terrorists are using RDX and other explosives to run currents Chemistry Explains… Medicine Chemistry is a huge part of medicine, both as a diagnostic and treatment tool. Chemistry departments in hospital medical labs analyze blood, urine, etc. for proteins, sugars and other substances. Blood analysis test the amount of potassium and sodium in our blood. Chemistry Explains… Cooking Chemistry explains how food changes as you cook it, how it rots, how to preserve food, how your body uses the food you eat, and how ingredients interact to make food, Chemistry Explains… Cleaning Part of the importance of chemistry is to explains how cleaning works. You use chemistry to help decide what cleaner is best for dishes, laundry, yourself, and your home. You use chemistry when you use bleaches and disinfectants and even ordinary soap and water. How do they work? That’s chemistry! Chemistry Explains… Medicine You need to understand basic chemistry so you can understand how vitamins, supplements, and drugs can help or harm you. Part of the importance of chemistry lies in developing and testing new medical treatments and medicines. Chemistry Explains… Environmental Issues Chemistry is at heart of environmental issues. What makes one chemical a nutrient and another chemical a pollutant? How can you clean up the environment? What processes can produce the things you need without harming the environment? Chemistry Explains… Chemistry Explains… CHEMISTRY OF CELL PHONES Chemistry Explains… Chemistry Explains… Chemistry Explains… Environmental Issu Chemistry is at the heart of environmental issues. What makes one chemical a nutrient and another chemical a pollutant? How we can clean up the environment? What processes can produce the things our need without harming the environment? We're all chemists. We use chemicals every day and perform chemical reactions without thinking much about them. Chemistry is important because everything you do is chemistry! Even our body is made of chemicals. Chemical reactions occur when we breathe, eat, or just sit there reading. All matter is made of chemicals, so the importance of chemistry is that it's the study of everything. What is the role of chemistry in society and technology? answer : Chemistry is essential for meeting our basic needs of - food - health - clean air - Soil - clothing - energy - water Chemical technologies ,enrich our quality of life in numerous ways by providing new solutions to problems in health.materials and energy usage. Chemistry Explains… SCIENTIFIC  PROCESS Scientists have created an organized way of doing what we all do every day.  They follow a series of steps in order to verify their results.  These step-by-step investigations are called “experiments” or “investigations.”  Every experiment has in it a control.  The control is what the results of the experiment are compared to in order to determine what, if anything occurred. Chemistry Explains… THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD The scientific method is the process used to explain observations in nature. The method involves:  making observations  forming a hypothesis  doing experiments to test the hypothesis STEP OF SCIENTIFIC METHOD 1. Ask a QUESTION or identify a problem. 2. Gather information and form a HYPOTHESIS. 3. Create an Hypothesis 4. Test Your Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment 5. Analyze Your Data and Draw a Conclusion 6.
